Planeswalkers

When Magic: the Gathering, a collectable trading card game, was first created, each player was a powerful Planeswalker. As a Planeswalker, you would cast spells and summon creatures in an attempt to beat your opponent, a rival planeswalker. As the storylines progressed, characters were revealed to be Planeswalkers as well, but were never considered as Players, like the traditional meaning of the term Planeswaker, that is until now!

The newest planeswalker is Nicol Bolas - Planeswalker, for Conflux, released February 6, 2009. Here's a sneak peak

Jace Beleren

Blue Planeswalker

Planeswalker - Jace Beleren

Jace is smart, maybe too smart for his own good. His magic is all about the mind-clairvoyance, telepathy, illusion. He is naturally reserved, confident in his own abilities but not cocky. Jace's capacity for deception has led him to make some bad choices, but he has always managed to escape the consequences. Just as blue mana is poised between white and black, Jace has a complex and troubled conscience. The nature of his abilities means he must make difficult decisions about what's right and how his actions define him.

Planeswalkers Rules - Part 1: The Basics

Planeswalker is a new card type. You can play a planeswalker only at the time you could play a sorcery. A planeswalker is a permanent, so when a planeswalker spell resolves, it comes into play under your control. Any spell or ability that affects a permanent (for example, "destroy target permanent") can affect a planeswalker. Note that planeswalkers aren't creatures; if a card says it affects a creature, it won't affect a planeswalker.

Each planeswalker has a subtype. For example, Jace Beleran says "Planeswalker -- Jace" on its type line. If two or more planeswalkers that share a subtype are in play, they're all put into their owners' graveyards as a state-based effect.

A Planeswalkers "Loyalty" is printed in its lower right corner. It comes into play with that many loyalty counters on it. If it is in ever in play with no loyalty counters on it then it's put into the owner's graveyard.

Planeswalkers Rules - Part 2: Planeswalkers Abilities

Each planeswalker has a number of activated abilities on it. You can play one of these abilities only at the time you could play a sorcery, and only if none of that planeswalker's abilities have been played yet that turn.

The cost to play a planeswalker's ability is to add or remove a certain number of loyalty counters from it. For example, +1 means "Put one loyalty counter on this planeswalker," and -3 means to "Remove three loyalty counters from this planeswalker." You can't play an ability with a negative loyalty cost unless the planeswalker has at least that many loyalty counters on it.
