Celebrating Earth Day 2012 ... All Year Long!

Celebrate Earth Day on April 22, 2012 with an image of the Blue Marble against dark tees that mimic outer space. This lens showcases some of my best-selling Earth Day designs at my Zazzle Store. The image is used with thanks to NASA's Apollo Program.

A little history from Wikipedia: Earth Day is a day that is intended to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth's natural environment. Earth Day was founded by United States Senator Gaylord Nelson as an environmental teach-in first held on April 22, 1970. Earth Day is now coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network, and is celebrated in more than 175 countries every year. April 22 corresponds to spring in the Northern Hemisphere and autumn in the Southern Hemisphere.

The Original Image

Upside Down

Did you know that the original photograph was taken "upside-down"? It was how the Apollo 17 astronaut's were viewing the Blue Marble. Makes you realize that directions like north and south are relative to our viewpoint.

One of the Best Shows I've Seen

Adapted from Wikipedia - Planet Earth is a 2006 television series produced by the BBC. Five years in the making, it was the most expensive nature documentary series ever commissioned by the BBC, and also the first to be filmed in high definition. The series comprises eleven episodes, each of which features a global overview of a different biome or habitat on Earth. At the end of each fifty-minute episode, a ten-minute featurette takes a behind-the-scenes look at the challenges of filming the series.

One of those series that isn't tedious! Wonderful! I rented it via Netflix rather than buy it.

David Attenborough on Planet Earth

Planet Earth: The Complete BBC Series"A hundred years ago, there were one and a half billion people on Earth. Now, over six billion crowd our fragile planet. But even so, there are still places barely touched by humanity. This series will take you to the last wildernesses and show you the planet and its wildlife as you have never seen them before." ~ David Attenborough's opening narration

"Our planet is still full of wonders. As we explore them, so we gain not only understanding, but power. It's not just the future of the whale that today lies in our hands: it's the survival of the natural world in all parts of the living planet. We can now destroy or we can cherish. The choice is ours." ~ David Attenborough, in closing
