Planning Birthday Parties for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Children

I am not deaf, but have a brother who is deaf in one ear, hard-of-hearing in the other, and multiply-disabled. I would love to share some of the things that can make a party for a deaf or disabled child special...it doesn't take much.

I hope you find something helpful, and will feel free to share your own experiences if you have a child who is deaf. My brother is an adult now, and I'm sure many advances have been made since we had his childhood parties...but the basic concepts are the same. I share some pictures of him in this lens.

The image here is from a site that seems to provide party items for the deaf, harriscomm.com, this one is from a birthday card. Please visit the site for more information about this image and the card. It's a cute card, showing how to spell the word "birthday" in sign language.

There is a much quicker way to say "Happy Birthday" in ASL (American sign language) that I'll show you later.

Happy Birthday to You in Sign Language

by Signing Time

A very colorful video, and it shows you how to sign "Happy Birthday" without spelling it out letter by letter, the way we have signed it to my brother every year for over 40 years.

Vision Becomes More Important

Lights and Colors

When you can't hear, other senses are heightened, like vision. Colors and lights are fun for everyone, but especially for someone who depends upon their sight to take in as much information as possible...like these little light-up mice that you put on your finger tips. Batteries are included, and you can think of creative games with them. Please click through to read more and view any choking hazards or other age-appropriate warnings.

These compact, powerful stereo floor monitors are sold in pairs. They feature ultra bright, sound responsive LED's. When connected, Rock Show transforms any room in the house into a full blown stage experience. The special shape of each unit is identical to the stage monitors professional musicians use. Meet My Brother, who is Deaf and Disabled

Taken at a Family Fun Day Party

I took this picture at a "Family Fun Day" at the group home where he lives. Though it wasn't a birthday party, I had a great time with him doing all kinds of simple crafts and hands-on things. Following are a few more pictures from that day that just may give you a few ideas by looking at the simple things John has in his hands. By the way, my brother is almost always happy and smiling. He is not only deaf, but also multiply-disabled from spinal meningitis when he was 6 months old.

Favorite Family with Deaf Child Movie

Mr. Holland's Opus

This is a movie that touched me deeply, because having a disabled person in the family can be challenging, delightful, painful, rewarding...well emotions can run the spectrum in a way that only someone who has lived in such a family can understand. I thought the way the story was portrayed was quite real. My brother is not as "able" as Cole in the movie, but there are moments in the movie that I can relate to completely.
