Planning Discount Luxury Cruises - be organized for a worry free vacation

I've found that a simple check list is a good starter for planning a luxury cruise vacation.

At the time that I am packing my bags, I check the list off because everything that I have on my list will be packed somewhere with me.

I will pack identification documents, and tickets on my person. This can either be a large pocket, a wallet, a purse or a carry on.

The rest will either go in a carry on or checked luggage.

The goal we are aiming for in organizing is this:

  • When you walk out the door of your house to go on the cruise, every item on your list is checked off.
  • Because the list is checked off, you know you have what you will need to be able to enjoy your cruise.

1st Step - The Cruise

The very first thing you must do is find out when you are going to take your cruise vacation. Everything else depends on that. Of course, you could also decide on the destination at the same time.

I've thought that the last minute deals are the best you can get from the cruise lines, but as it turns out, some of the better deals are those that are planned six months into the future. This is mainly due to the current financial situation. The cruise lines want bookings six months in advance, so they are more likely going to discount those tickets. But, checking the options carefully is important here.

2nd Step - Getting to the ship.

After you've decided on the cruise, you will want to check the cost of getting to the dock. If it is far enough, you may want to fly. But, driving is possible as well. Once we took a train. It was very relaxing.

3rd Step - Passport?

Are you going to need to get or renew a passport? If so, there is some consideration for the time it will take to acquire it. Many cruises leave from one country and enter another one. Sometimes it returns to the origin. But, if you have to leave your country, you will more than likely need a passport.

Follow this link and click on "US Passport" drop down menu, then select one of the passport options. Follow the steps to get your passport.

Step 4 - Build a check list

Create a list of items you will be taking with you. This list should be compared and modified depending on the cruise you chose to take. If you take an Alaskan cruise, you would want to pack your autumn wardrobe. But if it is a cruise to the Caribbean, you would want to pack more for a warm summer.

When planning for the clothes: Keep in mind that the ship provides a full service laundry and very reasonable prices. So, you don't have to make sure you have a clean set of clothes for each day. Also, mixing and matching can reduce the number of items you need to pack.

You can check each item off your list as you place it into the baggage you are taking. When the checklist is completed, that means you have all you planned to take.

The list

Here is a starter list. The smaller it is, the less you have to carry with you to the cruise and back again:
  • Extra or rechargeable batteries for electronic devices.
  • Charger for rechargeable batteries.
  • Swim wear.
  • The camera that you are comfortable taking with you on a trip like this.
  • Something to wear for the formal:

    • Log onto the cruise page you have been assigned to after you purchased your cruise to find out how many formals there will be.

      • You don't have to dress differently for each one. But, I'm sure that many people will want to.
There are photos taken prior to each formal dinner. They will be made available for sale during the cruise for you to take home as memorabilia.

  • Folding, tote or beach bag to carry purchase from shore to ship.
  • List of people you may want to purchase gifts or postcards for.
  • Baggage that you may be able to pack inside your luggage to go and you can put souvenirs in when you come back.
  • Shoes.

    • Flip-flops for on deck and around pool.

    • Comfortable walking shoes (for on shore or walking around deck).

  • Sunglasses - for those bright sunny days.
  • Prescriptions -- in case refills become necessary.
  • Pain relievers -- Expensive on ship.
  • Shaving cream -- Expensive on ship.
  • Sunscreen -- Expensive on ship.
  • Some extra cash for carrying on shore in case a card isn't accepted where you want to shop.
  • Light jacket or sweater for evenings.
