Below are a few guidelines to help get you and your parents thinking about what needs to be done.
Cut Your Dormitory Cost And Make Some Money
If you invest in housing near your child's campus, you could quite possibly turn a profit.Search for a house or condominium within just a few miles from your child's campus. Make sure the neighborhood is a safe one. Make sure the property can sleep at least 4 people with your child being one of them.
Once you decide on a property, estimate the potential rent you could bring in from each student renter. Also deduct any expenses you see down the road. Then make a bid on the house that would allow you to cover costs with cash left over.
With the extra money take care of some basic landscape and repairs. Furnish the house with inexpensive but durable furnishings and on the rent market it goes.
Make sure you charge a reasonable rent and insist on a formal lease from the other students. Even if you know them.
Then, pay your child a management fee to collect the rent and maintain the property.
Once your child finishes college, plan to sell the home.
Summer School Saves Time and Money
If you want to save money on tuition costs, consider taking summer classes at the local community college.
Summer classes are less expensive. This could also allow your child to graduate sooner. Summer classes are also a smart way to alleviate an overloaded "normal" semester. The classes seem to be a little more lenient academically and also smaller. This means the professor is more readily available for more personalized discussions and questions.
Always make sure that any course credits can be transfered to the students primary school before enrollment into a summer class.
