Have you ever felt a sharp pain in your heel or arch when you first get out of bed in the morning? This is the most common symptom of Plantar Fasciitis. Often the pain is worse with your first steps when getting out of bed in the morning. After walking around for several minutes, the pain gradually decreases.

For most people Plantar Fasciitis pain is more severe following periods of inactivity such as driving a car, watching television or getting up in the morning.

However, after your feet are warmed up the symptom dissapear. Don't be fooled, the problem is still there.

Plantar fasciitis can occur in both feet at the same time, but generally occurs only in one foot.

Hold each stretch for at least 30 seconds. Don't bounce and do one or two repetitions two to three times a day. Clockwise from upper left:

  2. While sitting, grasp your toes and gently

Plantar Fasciitis Treatment Tips

  • The best plantar fasciitis treatment is rest. This is the hard to accept for very active people. For lazy people, this is a welcome benefit.

  • If you are a runner, run less.

  • If you are a walker, walk less.

  • Don't just quit your exercise program. Get on a maintenance plan.

  • Applying ice (or a heat pack) to the heel area will provide immediate pain relief. Avoid using pain killers as they just mask the problem.

Tips For Preventing Fasciitis

  • Maintain a healthy weight: excess weight can cause stress on the body.

  • Wear good quality, supportive shoes: i.e. shoes with a strong heel counter and with good flexibility in the front of the shoe (that allows the toes to bend back easily and naturally). A good shoe will help stabilize the heel and ankle joints during walking and running. I recommend Super Feet shoe inserts.

  • Don't wear completely flat shoes. A raised heel reduces the tension in the plantar fascia.

  • Avoid walking barefoot on hard surfaces. At the minimum, wear flip-flop sandals when you want to walk barefoot.

  • Stretch your calf muscles during exercise. It's better to be warmed up before stretching. Greater flexibility in the tissue makes them less susceptible to damage.
