5 Steps to Planting a Flower Garden that Thrives

Step by Step Instructions

Before planting a flower garden it is always a great idea to browse around the internet, look in garden magazines and talk to other flower lovers to get some flower garden ideas that you can adapt to your needs to create a lovely garden that reflects your personal taste.

After you have some ideas, you are ready start on the phase of planning your garden and getting ready to plant. You may choose to use pre-made flower garden plans or you might be enthused about creating your own flower bed design. Either way, there are five preparation steps that you will be wise to take.

Step One: Find Out Your Hardiness Zone

Using the USDA Hardiness Zone Maps, you can find out which zone you live in. This will help you to choose appropriate flowers and plants that grow well in your area. It is really senseless to plant flowers or plants that are not intended for your zone in a flower bed; however, a lot of the flowers from other zones can be planted in an indoor garden or in a greenhouse where you can control the temperature, light and humidity.

Step Two: Check the Spacing and Height Recommendations for the Plants or Flowers that You Intend to Plant

When creating a flower garden design or plan, it only makes sense to check the spacing and height of the flowers when they are fully mature. You don't want to overcrowd a flower bed design and the height will tell you which flowers need to be placed in back and which ones are appropriate in the front of the garden.

Step Three: Know the Recommended Planting Season

For each flower or plant that you plan on planting, you need to know when it should be planted. A lot of flowers and plants are accustomed to spring planting; however, many things, like most flower bulbs, actually do better when planted in the fall. They require a cold season in order to bloom during the spring.

    Step Four: Prepare the Soil

Like everything in life, flowers and plants will do better if started with a solid foundation. In a flower garden, the foundation is the soil. By testing your soil and researching additives, you can find out what additives and supplements need to be added to the soil to create a thriving garden.

    Step Five: Start Planting

Only after you have completed the first four steps and have a flower garden plan in place are you ready to start planting a flower garden. When planting the garden, make sure to follow the recommended spacing and depth for each flower or plant and you will have mastered the skill of planting a flower garden that will thrive if taken good care of.
