What's Your Planting Zone? - Part 2 of 4

This is part 2 of a 4 part series - you'll find links to the other parts in our Link List further down the page.

Welcome back! As promised, in part 2 we're going to look at how planting zones affect what you should be growing in your garden.

Where To Find Your Planting Zone

And Why You Need To Know It

Your planting zone is an important piece of information when you're planting a garden. It will help you to decide when is the right time to plant and what kinds of vegetables and flowers will be successful.

When you are buying seeds or plants, they are often labeled for a particular gardening zone. These zones are based on the temperature and climate.

When you look at a planting zone map, you will see color-coded zones. Each of these zones falls within a certain temperature range and frost-safe date.

This is basically the date after which you can be fairly certain your garden won't be damaged by a late frost. If you plant too early, this can ruin your garden before it even gets started.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture provides information about planting zones on their website, and it is also available in many gardening guides. Your local garden store should also be able to tell you what zone you are in.
