Plant trees ~ change your life
I just ran across this link online that allows me to "plant" a tree on my website, and for every tree I virtually plant, they'll plant a real one. Isn't that cool? Check it out! Every Day is Earth Day
But it's not just planting trees ~ it's a whole mind-set, a lifestyle. Earth Day is nice, but we can't just live "green" one day out of the year. Planting a tree in your own backyard helps. Planting another helps more. But what else is there?
You know the drill: recycle, save water, use less electricity, plan trips to use less gasoline, plant trees. That's what people say all the time, and more people are doing these things, which is great! But what else? Dig deeper...
There is a whole world out there waiting for our help. If I conserve water, that's good for the future ~ but how does that help the folks in Sudan who are without clean drinking water today? I can eat less meat today, but how does that help folks in Haiti who don't have food on the table tonight?
It's Hip to be Green
Remember when "tree hugger" was a derogatory term? A put down? Now it's cool, hip, in. Embrace a tree, embrace the "green" lifestyle! Some people plant trees in their yards, others go overseas to help plant trees in faraway villages. Some of our trees produce shade while others produce fruit. In some places, we plant trees to act as wind breakers. They provide protection to the soil, helping to prevent erosion.
More and more, I see commercials, rock stars, and teenagers in on living green. This is a good sign! Going Green, being a Tree Hugger... the lifestyle is entering the mainstream and all of us are more aware of our choices.

First Person Stories
- Living the Question: Trees for Life International
- I lived my life as a statement, until I met someone whose life asked a question.
Back when my life was a statement, I appeared to ?have it made.? I had a successful career, family, financial security? all that I had been told would bring true happiness. So why wasn't I truly happy?
Advances in communication had brought the world into my home, and in 1985 I witnessed the horror of thousands of children in Ethiopia dying from starvation. Having children of my own, I couldn't help but ask myself, ?What would it feel like to watch my own children die because they had nothing to eat? What would I do??
Trees & Tree Stuff on eBay
Did you know you can buy tree starters on eBay? I didn't, either! Also silk plants (for the gardner-wanna-be's, like me), fruit trees, accessories. Have a gander ~

It's more than trees....
What began as a non-profit organization in Wichita, KS that planted fruit trees in India, has grown and expanded beyond, surely, anyone's dreams! Today, at Trees for Life, you can learn about the original lemon trees, but also Moringa trees, which are truly miracles! Here's another lens that talks specifically about the Moringa tree.
But it's not just trees. Trees for Life is a movement, a connection between people that sparks and grows and has touched people's lives far beyond trees. In Haiti, Guatemala, Ethiopia, the USA, Nicaragua, India; with trees and cookstoves and books, Trees for Life is changing the world.
How do they accomplish this? By focusing on the long term goals of each particular community, and maintaining some basic elements. Those basics include self-initiative, responsibility, education, focusing on potential, making connections, using technology, and what I found to be most inspiring, "one teaches two."

Interesting "lens", Sue! Still figuring out what to read first, per the layout. Good thoughts on being aware of "what's beyond" in terms of real need! Hey, thanks for the section on Trees for Life. TFL has tree-shirts too :)

Great lens. there is hope. Attitudes are changing. When I discuss environmental issues with my students it always surprises me how much they know and understand. We will be leaving the world to them. Hopefully it will be a cleaner one. Posted June 02, 2008 |

Very nice lens and a worthy cause. Going green has to be more than an individual effort if we're to help stop global warming. It has to be a government effort, because that's the scale that's required. Posted May 21, 2008 |
