Know Your Plastics

Ranked #7,297 in Healthy Living, #124,029 overall

What You Are Drinking and Eating Out of can Definitely Influence Your Health

The plastic bottles we drink out of every day, be it sodas or water, have a number rating within the recycling triangle. Actually, all the plastics we use daily have a rating. The rating system is 1-7, but that does not mean 1 is greater than 7 or vice versa. The numbers are given to more easily recognize what they are made of, what they are used for, and how they are recycled. For instance, the number 1 bottles are recommended for a one time use only and should never be refilled. These would be your bottles of water or sodas that we drink every day. This is even found in your mouthwash and plastic salad dressing bottles. The problem with these plastics is that they leach chemicals into the beverages or foods and then we consume them. Sometimes you can even taste the plastic. Temperature can affect this as well, so your one time use bottles may already be contaminated. You don't know what temperatures your beverage endures before it is delivered to the store. It could range from cold, Denver like temperatures to Dallas and Phoenix heat. I know you have walked in groceries and found many palates of water sitting outside in the sun.

What the Ratings Mean

The number 7 plastics leach Bisphenol A (BPA) that I discussed in my last post. This again is a harmful xenoestrogen that interferes with human hormonal messaging.

So what's safe? Plastics with the numbers 2, 4, and 5 are considered to be safe. Your best choice is anything in glass. You can drink your own filtered water at home in containers you know are safe. You will improve your health outlook and do your part at putting less plastics in our landfills.

Very useful info. I was a bit surprised to learn about the 1 rating for soda bottles.

The plastic bottle manufacturer should design the bottle in such a way that it can be easily wash and reuse, at least with that, we can reuse the bottle without throwing it away.

Plastic is much cheaper compared to glass, but we pay additionally for it, with our health. :(

Yeah...we try to buy in as much glass as possible. We also fervently avoid cooking with plastic in the microwave...I actually don't cook in the microwave either. There is usually nothing that I want so bad that I have to get it in 30 seconds.
