Can you become addicted to plastic surgery?
How often have you considered having cosmetic surgery? Consider the options: a nip here, a tuck there, a new nose to match a tighter, wrinkle-free face.Having such surgery on a whim may be an appealing thought, but there are those who go under the knife repeatedly and gratuitously and these individuals battle a compulsion that no amount of plastic surgery would ever be able to eradicate. I speak of Plastic Surgery Addiction. Movie stars, minor celebrities and even people like you and me can suffer from this disorder that compels us to seek unnecessary surgical procedures.
Think of Michael Jackson, Mickey Rourke and Demi Moore. These are stars that have undergone such an ungodly amount of surgery that their faces are twisted into an unrecognisable lump of silicon. They have the money but not the common sense to say 'That's enough.' The relative affordability of cosmetic surgery has also prompted many soccer moms to consider procedures like breast lifts and tummy tucks. Unlicensed cosmetic surgeons perform cut-price surgeries, at the cost of many a patient's life. Yet, what does this matter if the price remains low? Millions of people pay every single year to have the body of their dreams and often walk away a broken mess.
This is BDD or body dysmorphic disorder, a specific psychological condition that causes suffers to believe that they are hideously ugly, even though they may be outwardly beautiful. The patient will avoid mirrors, worrying every single day about their looks and fussing over non-existent defects. Symptoms to watch out for include excessive grooming and constantly checking one's appearances. The sad part is that as soon as a patient has corrected the 'defect' they will find a further flaw and worry about that.
Having a healthy outlook on plastic surgery is the best way to combat BDD; that and seeking professional help.
Strange but Unforunately, TRUE!
Many celebrities opt for cosmetic surgery, purely to increase their looks and define their own personal style. Yet one women, who was so unsure of her looks decided to inject cooking fat into her face, as a form of personal Botex. Ridiculous really but here is her story:Han Mi Ok, a Korean woman of 47, was once a famous singer. She could afford real surgeries and went for constant injections to maintain her looks, even though she was already beautiful, as evident by her picture. Her career was marked by disaster when she decided leave for Japan to further her career. Disaster struck in the form of her first illegal injection at the hands of an amateur surgeon.
Her face started to become unrecognisable, even to her own mother. Injection after injection, her face twisted and bloated out of proportion until her parents begged her to stop. This is when she added further fuel to the fire by personally injecting her own face with cooking oil and paraffin. Some people just don't know when to stop. She became penniless, with only two to three dollars in her possession and a bare room to her name. She appeared on TV in 2004 to show the world what she had become; a slave to her own addiction. People were shocked and donations poured in to help restore her to her former self. After fifteen operations, Han Mi Ok finally resembled her old self once more. It was the end of a long road for her, but sadly her mother would never see her corrected face, as she passed on shortly after the first corrective surgery.
Moral of the story: use a reputable surgeon for plastic surgery procedures! Performing a DIY surgery is akin to driving a car into a brick wall and expecting a decent nose job out of it.
Celebrity Surgery
Because they can!
Plastic surgery is a big business. It is in fact, the most successful of all elective surgeries. What was considered a rarity 10-20 years ago is now a daily occurrence, with breast jobs, rhinoplasty and tummy tucks, a reward soccer moms bestow on themselves after a tough week of carpooling.Like all trends, it was the celebrity who popularized the concept of plastic surgery for the masses. One of the first was Marilyn Monroe, who had the first notable showbiz nose job. After that, the floodgates opened.
Now, mostly every female [and male, I'm looking at you Governor Schwarzenegger] celebrity has had some form of plastic surgery.
Nose Jobs include: Halle Berry, Demi Moore, Winona Ryder and even the 'perfect' Selma Hayek. I do not have space in this article to include all the
Breast implant celebrities though, let's just say that the casting director smiles upon a nice, round C-cup. It's their job to entertain us, and if it means going under the knife to keep that ass firm, then so be it.
Breastfeeding after surgery
There are many factors to consider when deciding whether or not to have elective breast augmentation surgery. Aside from the psychological impact of a dramatic change in appearance, the financial implications and the risk of infection, women also have to consider whether or not they would like to breastfeed their infants if they should ever become pregnant in the future.Breast surgery doesn't necessarily exclude breastfeeding, but studies have shown that women who undergo enlargement surgery through saline or silicone implants are three times as likely to have an inadequate milk supply (also called lactation insufficiency). Even if your milk supply is adequate, you still stand the chance of experiencing exaggerated breast engorgement with pain, fever, and chills that are more intense than usual. Much depends on the type of incision used during the operation. Incisions made in the fold of the breast or along the armpit cause a minimum of interference, while a periareolar incision (made around the nipple) is most likely to cause problems.
Researchers are still trying to determine why breast implants seem to interfere with breastfeeding. Common hypotheses include the belief that surgery has the potential to damage the milk-producing ducts and that the pressure of the implant on the surrounding tissue causes a type of injury that might hamper milk production. Interestingly enough, doctors have found that even if women who have underwent breast augmentation surgery are capable of breastfeeding they are reluctant to do so, least the practise damage the outward appearance of their breasts or leakage from the implant poisons their child. (In fact, neither saline nor silicone is poisonous. A compound similar to silicone is used to treat upset stomachs in infants.)
Breast enlargement surgery is one of the most frequently requested elective plastic surgery procedures in practices around the globe. This surgery has the potential to turn a person's life around, for instance in the case of a double mastectomy patient. It is imperative, however, to consider the possible consequences of the surgery in the long run.
Are you a good candidate for a tummy tuck?
What we refer to in layman's terms as a 'tummy tuck', surgeons call a much more ominous-sounding abdominoplasty procedure. The main reason individuals choose to have this elective plastic surgery procedure is to remove excess skin and fatty deposits from around the abdominal area that for some reason or another responds neither to dieting or exercise. However, not everybody is a good candidate for tummy tuck surgery. During your initial consultation with the surgeon of your choice, you will sit down together and consider the following:
- Are you physically healthy enough to undertake this type of invasive procedure?
- Why are you choosing to have the surgery? Is your reason emotionally and psychologically sound?
- Do you have realistic expectations of the outcome of your surgery?
- Do you have an active, healthy lifestyle?
- Are you within a healthy weight range?
Many patients subconsciously believe that having surgery is going to change certain unrelated areas of their life, i.e. their marriage or work situation. In this case the surgeon will suggest psychological counseling before making a decision.
Smokers for instance are not good candidates for surgery. If you do smoke you will have to quit or cut down drastically.
At no time should abdominoplasty be seen as an alternative to dieting and exercise in order to lose unwanted weight around the stomach.
The following cases are good grounds for a tummy tuck:
- Restoring firmness and shape to a woman's abdominal area after pregnancy. Many women are capable of regaining their pre-pregnancy figure through diet and exercise, but for those who battle with the post-natal bulge, a tummy tuck can be the perfect solution.
- Correcting sagging skin after significant weight loss.
- Combating and correcting the effects of aging.
Losing weight is a great accomplishment at any age, but the older you get the harder it gets for the skin's elasticity to keep up. In this case abdominoplasty is one of the possible solutions.
Time is a harsh mistress and we all feel the effects of gravity as the years pass by. A tummy tuck can do away with those unsightly love handles and pot bellies.
Plastic surgery has become a billion dollar industry overnight. You can now even apply for plastic surgery finance if your medical aid won't cover it. But just because it has become a norm in our society doesn't mean it is right for everyone. Always remember to consult a reputable physician and to consider the plastic surgery costs before you go under the knife.
Children and Plastic Surgery
Did you have breast surgery as a child? Or even a nose-job on your sweet sixteen? Many of us grew up, unhappy with the way we looked or how others perceived us. Now, as 'mature' and responsible adults, we can take the decision to enhance our looks with cosmetic surgery or lighter surgical options such as Botox or Restylane. For those of us with children who have inherited our genetic defects, such as crooked noses or elephant ears, cosmetic surgery may be the only viable option to ensure their happiness throughout their formative years.Surgeries such as breast augmentation and tummy-tucks are the new evolving trend amongst teens. Before young bodies have even begun to develop, surgeons slice and cut their way into kids who are not even certain of what they want. Mommy and Daddy were sufficiently begged to alleviate their social-suffering and now an ethnic nose can become more western, or a slightly bulgy tummy, can be ironed out. A small number of teenagers have been known to accept their bodies at such an early age and the ramifications of unnecessary plastic surgery will only become prevalent after many years have passed.
Richer nations take advantage of the poorer ones, by capitalising on the concept of having plastic surgery abroad. As a parent, you send your kids down to sunny Costa Rica for a cosmetic surgery holiday, where they would go with their friend to tan, tone and develop a new body with a cost-effective doctor. With prices as low as $500, 00 US dollars for rhinoplasty, who can refuse such an offer? As a parent, it is your duty to educate your children regarding plastic surgery procedures such as liposuction.
As trite as it sounds, inner and not outer beauty, is what counts.
