Platypus: the amazing, playful and mysterious Australian mammal
Platypus are playful and elusive. I have seen Platypus in their natural habitat in a mountain creek at dawn in Northern New South Wales. I had to get up early on a chilly winter's morning to see this shy, elusive, playful mammal. In the wild, Platypus are playful like dolphins, but unlike the extroverted dolphins, platypus behave like introverts. I have also watched Platypus play in Sydney Zoo.

Platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus) is a semi-aquatic mammal endemic to eastern Australia, including Tasmania. Together with the four species of echidna, it is one of the five extant species of monotremes, the only mammals that lay eggs instead of giving birth to live young...The bizarre appearance of this egg-laying, venomous, duck-billed, beaver-tailed, otter-footed mammal baffled European naturalists when they first encountered it, with some considering it an elaborate fraud...The unique features of the Platypus make it an important subject in the study of evolutionary biology and a recognisable and iconic symbol of Australia...it is now protected...[but] it is not under any immediate threat.
