Play Chopin

You could play Chopin too.

For many years I had thought that playing any piece of music by Chopin was something that would always be out of my reach. Yet recently I have started learning some of the more manageable pieces by this wonderful composer.

I'm hoping that this lens might inspire others to also try their hand at playing piano music by Chopin.

The Posthumas Waltz in A minor

Valse KK IVb No 11 (1843)

This is a beautiful waltz which is so typically and unmistakeably Chopin. It is not a well known piece, but is well worth taking the time to learn to play.

It is certainly one of the easier Chopin compositions, but there are still a few challenges to overcome. This is a very nice place to start if you want to play Chopin.

The Preludes

Opus 28

Chopin wrote 24 preludes. They range in style from beautiful lilting melodies to exuberant showy pieces. They range in difficulty from manageable to virtually impossible to play.

None of them is easy. Quite a few of them are manageable to a moderately skilled pianist.

Prelude No. 7 in A major is very well known and is amongst the more manageable pieces. Bars 11 and 12 are the most demanding and involve a bit of a stretch of the right hand and a huge chord which can only be played by using the thumb on two notes simultaneously.

Prelude No 4 in E minor is another manageable piece. Bars 17 and 18 are the most demanding here. A big jump in the left hand to a four note chord followed in the next bar by a triplet against two eighth notes.

My recommendation is to buy the whole set of preludes in one book and try a few of them.

Advice on Playing the First Prelude

Tricky but Playable

People are often put off playing the first prelude as soon as they see the music. The piece looks extremely complicated on paper and it sounds complicated when it is played. However this piece is not as difficult to play as it would appear to be.

Here are a few pointers which may help you if you decide to learn this delightful piece of music:

Pattern - There is a regular pattern that is repeated in each bar. Although the notes vary from bar to bar the pattern remains very similar throughout the whole piece.

Which Hand? - This often causes confusion. The left hand plays the three notes which start each bar in the base clef. The right hand plays everything else.

Rhythm Changes. - The rhythm is slightly different in some bars. I would encourage you to learn the piece first using the rhythm pattern as in the first bar for the whole piece, and then when you know the notes you can make the changes where needed to perfect the piece.

Speed - This piece does not have to be played fast. In my opinion many pianist play it too fast and lose much of the beauty of the harmonic changes which it contains. Play it smoothly and with feeling and it will sound great.

Of all the pieces that Chopin wrote, his preludes are arguably the most manageable.

Important!

The two things that help me most.

I have been very fortunate in that I have found myself a very competent and encouraging teacher.

If you want to play really well you need to do the same. Find somebody who you can relate to and who can play the piano well.

Most Importantly - I make a serious effort to find time to PRACTICE. When I practice I make progress. When I don't practice I regress.

Don't expect to learn much from your teacher if you don't find the time to practice. You will be wasting your own time and your teacher's.

Never played because I've never studied piano, but I like very much to read a good book while listening to Chopin Mazurkas. Great music!

You are so right about practicing. It's amazing when you take a little break how rusty you are when you start back up. Luckily (usuallyl!), it's like riding a bike.

Music of the romantic era, particularily that of Chopin, has been my favorite music to play for many years. I have struggled to find music written by any other composer that I can relate to as well as Chopin's. It is so full of emotion, and anybody can relate to and add their own experience to any piece by Chopin. Some of my favorite pieces to play are Nocturne in Eb Major (which is an easier piece for those who are looking), Mazurka in Bb Major, Waltz in a minor (another easy piece), Prelude in B flat Major, and Etude in c minor (More commonly known as the Revolutionary Etude). With romantic style music, you are given the liberty to play the notes but make the music your own, adding rubatos, dims., crescendos, etc. You can change up the phrasing to your own liking, but keep in mind, you must adhere to the romantic style. Chopin peddling can be tricky, but pay close attention to the markings. This is one area where you DO NOT want to make your own. His peddling is incredibly unique and the piece will not sound musical if the peddling is off.
