  • ronberry Jan 23, 2012 @ 8:05 pm | delete
A surprisingly useful lens. The title is deceptively vanilla. The harmonica madness video is a gem, I actually laughed out loud at one point. And I learned something new about bending notes on the harmonica... thanks Mac33
  • Mac33 Jan 28, 2012 @ 5:06 pm | delete
I love that video...it reminds me of the old Warner Bros cartoons I watched as a kid, parts of that tune were used in some of them.

I've always wondered how hard it must be to control the pitch and notes you're playing when you're blowing on a harmonica and haven't gotten used to where to position your mouth. Interesting lens, I never played though, seriously at least.

I always thought that a Harmonica was also known as a Mouth Organ. I had never heard it described as a Harp. Always thought that a Harp was that big instrument from Ireland that you sit or stand behind to play. Could you confirm this for me?
  • Mac33 Jan 28, 2012 @ 5:09 pm | delete
Yup, a harmonica is also known as a mouth organ, a mouth harp or a harp...not to be confused with the big harp from Ireland (and seen on the Guinness logo).
  • Edutopia Dec 14, 2011 @ 11:06 am | delete

Thanks! Your lens has inspired me to start re-learning to play the harp! I've bought one over a year ago, but I never found (or took) the time to play it... I was aspiring to be a traveling street performer at one point in my life so I got it because it was practical and wanted to start traveling around the world playing it for food money. Too bad I missed out on that part of my life, but they say it's never too late...

The Marine Band is the quintessential harmonica. It is the classic choice among blues and rock musicians. The great thing about this harmonica is that it is also perfect for beginners. It is easy to play and has a beautiful sound. It is extremely made and durable. This one will last a long time- plus Hohner stands behind their products!
Bottom line- if you are going to buy a harmonica then this is the one. It's affordable, well made and sounds great! This IS the best harmonica for your money.

My hubby is a harmonica player. He's really been getting serious about it for the last couple of years. He plays blues-style and he has been studying Little Walter lately. He is an audio professional and he has been collecting vintage harmonica microphones and fixing them up. I'll be sure and tell him to drop by and visit your lens. He's always looking for tips and tricks.

No, I did not learn to play. I learned that it was also called a harp. That's news to me. I looked at this lens while completing a quest and thought it was interesting becasue Stevie Wonder is one of the best harmonica players that I know. He is the reason I know anything about the harmonica as an instrument. Something about him might be a nice ad to this lens

The harmonica is a wonderful instrument that you can keep in your pocket and play anywhere.

I've tried playing harmonica on several occasions but alas I haven't really got to grips with it. It's so different to the other instruments I play, it's like learning a complete new language.

Good links in this lens! I do have a tip: Make sure you ASK if a band wants you to sit in before assuming they want you up there. And if you go to a jam, bring harps in different keys (unless you play chromatic) and learn how to transpose so that when they call out a song in E you grab the right harp :)

The harmonica is so awesome! I love it when musicians bust out with it in the middle of a bluesy tune. I have a mini-urge to learn it. I had a toy one as a kid that I loved.

I've been trying to get back into guitar. I would LIKE to play blues (and viewed an aweome Billy Gibbons lesson on blues) but find I can only play some easy Ramones songs. Still fun, no matter what.

I shall dust my harmonica off, and head to the beach and be that weird guy on the sand playing music. (i'll learn how to play first) also I'm in the caribbean, and most beaches are vacant for the most part. So I guess i won't be too obnoxious!! thx for lens!! good read.

my father who passed away many years ago used to have this tiny hohner harmonica that he would play as a joke on stage instead of the real one. i remember being totally amazed at the fact that he could actually belt out a tune on something that was about an inch long. great lens 5*

I've been wanting to learn how to play the harmonica, but it's hard to come across places to teach you that here in Egypt. I also seem to lack the basic knowledge, I've always thought that Shipping Up to Boston was played with a harmonica, now I doubt that it can even be played using one. Great lens though, thanks.

I actually bought a harmonica about fifteen years ago. Sadly it now lives in the back of a drawer and it probably sounds better there than if I get it out to try and play it. after looking at this lens ...who knows maybe I'll dig it out one more time.

    You wrote:
Bending notes is a technique to change the pitch of a note as you are playing. [True. You may START a note bent, as well]

Draw bends can be done on holes 1 through 6 [Draw 5 is a quarter-tone bend and not useful in western hemisphere music except as an effect]

    Great, great site
... especially if Google adds the side bars without the webmaster spending hours in that process.

    When I was 13
....my HS went to NYC and we saw White Xmas Chet Clark play Slaughter on 10th Avenue on his 12 note chromatic. I was smitten. Back home. I grabbed what little cash I had and bout Chromatic 64 -- although I prefer a 12.. After hundreds of hours of practice and copying many of the Harmonicat's and Larry Adler's tunes. -- alone or with a trio -- I won several contests, played at vets hospitals, and played in community concerts, etc.

What I did not realize until years later was that I had stoked my brain's memory cells,, expanding same to later be able to better study, memorize, complete a post -graduate degree and cope with a variety of life and career challenges.

    GO FOR IT !

    Happy How

Cool. I lensrolled ya so I could personally come back and invest in some of these resources when I've got a couple extra bucks to spare! I've been trying to think of the next instrument I'd like to learn. Never really thought about the harmonica... but it's such a sweet sounding instrument that not that many people play. How's your progress coming along? Thanks for the great lens. 5-stars and a fave comin' your way!

different from what we hear everyday. I think this lens is really great.
