How To Play The Piano - The Basics

Let's start with the very basics about how to play the piano. Let's just assume that you've never done anything more then sit down at a piano and tinker around. If you're really serious about being able to learn to play piano, make sure you understand right away that it is going to take a whole lot of practice.

Some people have a natural proclivity but you don't have to be ambidextrous or have unbelievable finger dexterity in order to be able to play most songs. But going from beginner to even being an average pianist is still going to take some time and practice. Consider yourself warned :)

How To Play Piano - The Proper Position

With that out of the way, let's talk about how to position yourself properly in relation to the piano. Most people make the mistake of not getting the correct bench height when they first began to learn to play piano.

This leads them to get comfortable in a poor position in relationship to the keyboard leading to fatigue and making some aspects of playing not only less than ideal, but in some cases almost impossible.

In other words, if your hands are too high in relationship to your elbows or too low, you'll stretch your back, your elbow and wrist joints, and even your fingers after just a few minutes of playing.

There is a reason why piano benches are designed the way they are, and that is to ensure proper positioning of the arms and upper body.

How To Play The Piano - Your Bench And Body

Adjust the bench so that your forearms are roughly parallel to the keyboard and a couple of inches above it so that your fingers are actually reaching down to the keys about an inch. Don't let your elbows fall below the keys or the above them more than inch or two.

Because in either of those two situations you will either be having to bend your wrists up in order to reach the keys, or you'll be reaching down - neither of which is good.

You should also be close enough to the keys that you don't have to reach out, pushing your elbows away from your body toward the piano. Neither do you want your elbows to end up behind you.

Your elbows should be slightly forward of the centerline of your body. This allows them to hang from your shoulders quite naturally with very little effort. Remember, with a piano you want your fingers to do the talking. Getting your fingers in the right position to do that is important.
