Creators of Sonic: Sonic the Hedgehog was created by main designer Naoto Oshima and chief programmer Yuji Naka. Sega needed a mascot to counter Nintendo's popular Mario Brothers. Other contenders included a rabbit, a dog, and a Theodore Roosevelt lookalike who eventually evolved into Robotnik.

First Appearance: In the game titled "Sonic the Hedgehog," released June 23, 1991.

There have been a few different stories of Sonic's origins over the years. According to Sega's story, Sonic was once an ordinary brown hedgehog who accidentally burrowed into Doctor Kintobar's laboratory. An accident involving a treadmill turned him blue. Kintobar was experimenting with ways to rid Sonic's world of evil forces and one of his methods blew up in his face, turning him into Robotnik and also releasing the power rings that Sonic so frequently collects. Sonic was forced to get out of there.

In the comics, Sonic's world was once peacefully united under King Maximillian. After an invasion by humans was successfully repelled, Maximillian was betrayed by Robotnik and exiled to another dimension. Sonic, Princess Sally and other characters escaped to form the underground Freedom Fighters.

In a third version, Sonic was born on Christmas Island, where he knew Doctor Robotnik as "Doctor Egghead." Apparently, their rivalry dated back to before the first video game was released and was sparked by the existence of the Chaos Emeralds. One of their first documented fights occurred at a competition Sonic was singing at. Sonic becomes a rover, preferring to cross and recross many parts of the world and only stopping to foil yet another one of Robotnik's schemes.
