Homemade Playdough is a Great Craft for Kids, and is Better than Store Bought!

Trying to come up with new and exciting ways to keep my children entertained has become difficult. Which is why my 2 year old and I decided to make playdough for the first time last week.

Being a stay at home mom is wonderful, but sometimes I find myself channeling my energy towards other things and not stimulating activities for my kids. They love coloring, painting (particularly finger painting), reading, etc., but all of that gets old fast especially for my middle child.

I have 3 children (2 years, 15 months, 7 weeks) and the oldest 2 love doing crafts...particularly playdough. They love to smoosh it, squeeze it, cut it, roll it, etc. So one day, feeling quite crafty I decided we would make our own playdough.

Our church nursery has some homemade and some store bought playdough available for the kids during Sunday school. I noticed that the homemade that they had seemed easier to work with, and was a more natural looking color. After having seen the 2 side by side, I personally preferred the homemade, hands down.

And with our family budget being a little tight these days (who's isn't?), I thought making the playdough ourselves would be a cheaper way to go. But unlike other things where making it yourself does save you money, I was surprised to find we spent a little more then we would have had we just bought it. But o well...my daughter had fun and that is all that matters!

TIP 1: Have your child wear an apron or old clothes when making. The food coloring tends to get EVERYWHERE when little hands get a hold of it.

TIP 2: A little food coloring goes a long way.

TIP 3: Do not make the stove any warmer than med/low or you may burn the dough.

Homemade Squishes the Competition

Price wise, store bought playdough is better. However, I really like the texture, the feel, the color, and overall playability (is that even a word?) of homemade over the store bought playdough. The reason homemade playdough is more expensive is because it calls for 1/2 cup of cream of tarter (which cost me $7). Although if you buy it in bulk, you would be saving considerably. In the batch that we made, it probably would fill like 8 or 9 store containers of playdough...so you have to figure total cost of making it was like, ummm....$10 (maybe a little less). I just recently saw Play-doh on sale for $.97/container, so the savings is minimal by buying it in the store, but it is still something I suppose.

Making Our Creation

My Daughter Grace (2) had a ball mixing up the flour, salt, cream of tarter, water and oil mixture. As it heated it got harder and harder to stir, as it was forming into dough, so I helped her, but for the most part she did a lot of the work. Having 2 other children (younger children) as well, it is hard for me to be able to do cooking/baking activities with my little Betty Crocker, but this was something that wasn't messy, and didn't take very only to do, but meant the world to her.

My Recipe

4 cups flour
1 cup salt
4 cups water
4 tablespoons oil
1/2 cup cream of tartar
Food coloring

Mix all of your ingredients together in a sauce pan. Cook and stir over med/low heat until playdough is completely formed (not sticky). You will want to add your food coloring to the mixutr while hot and cooking...however, if you want several different colors if you wait until it is done to add it, you will just have to work it all together while still warm instead. Allow to cool slightly before storing in an air tight container or zip lock bag.

Don't you just love the feeling of the dough when you handle it? I think my favourite part of making playdough is the kneading until it is smooth and pliable. I have lensrolled you, thanks for all the info on this lens.

There is a restaurant supply store near me, and I bought cream of tarter by the pound and saved tremendously!
