Playing card collecting is easy, and fun!

PLUS it doesn't cost much at all.

Collectors can collect single, or "swap" cards, or they can collect decks, double, or even triple decks, such as Canasta decks.

I have been a playing card collector since I was 6 years old. I started going door to door asking for people's old, unwanted cards and jokers. I want to get back into this hobby, which I have had on the back burner for at least 5 years. Writing this lens has made me excited about my hobby again.

Let me share this fun hobby with you.

Some great card decks! These are definitely collectible.

More about card collecting...

There are many ways to collect playing cards.

Collectors of playing cards and card decks have a lot of different categories from which to choose. Some people love to collect animal cards, for instance, and others insist on only collecting antique cards.

Since playing cards are still being manufactured, it is possible to start a new collection for very little money. And if you trade with somebody else, collecting single cards becomes even less expensive.

Have you considered asking your friends or neighbors if they have any playing cards they don't want any more? That is how I got started collecting cards. It was entirely FREE!

So... get some cards, arrange them in a shoe box, and you are set. You can arrange them in categories now, and get started trading.

A Union Jack-type deck!

This card deck is colorful AND collectible.

This card deck could be very modern, or come from the 60's. It's a nice and very collectible deck.

Some people only collect decks from other countries. Others only collect designs or flags.

Cards with pictures on the OTHER side.

These cards are more rare.

This photo shows a card deck with different designs on the suit side of the cards. These kinds of cards are usually sold at a premium because they are unusual.

I have seen some vintage decks that have beautiful scenes of parks, nature, and even miners on them. This kind of card can be quite collectible and rare, especially if it is vintage or antique.

Here is a common Joker card.

Facts about jokers and joker collectors

This card, a joker, is extremely collectible, just because it is a joker. Even common jokers are collectible - but joker collectors can sometimes only need ONE of the common varieties.

Some collectors specialize in only jokers from all different decks and companies. You will find humorous jokers of all kinds when you collect cards.

If you like jokers, you will find two in most decks you buy new. But be careful when buying older, vintage decks. Often, you will find a good deal on a card deck. The reason? A collector has already removed the jokers.

Are these foreign cards? Or maybe they are Tarot cards.

Card collectors run across many different kinds of cards.

This set of 4 cards could be a Spanish or French deck. It also could be an early Tarot card deck. Often, these kinds of decks contain different suits, like coins and swords. They are beautiful and very collectible, and come in many different designs.

So... have I got your interest yet? I hope so. Collecting cards is still a good deal, and since it is still a growing hobby, you can still find good deals in resale shops and thrift stores.

OOPS! Did I give away a secret? Well, that is OK. I figure there are enough playing cards to go around.

Next: I have listed some books from Amazon about collecting playing cards (remember: Amazon also offers its titles used - just check at the site if you want to save some serious money).

After that, check out the Ebay playing cards for sale. Sometimes I go to Ebay and look at all the neat cards. I don't always buy any, but it is fun to see what is out there, and how much it is going for there.

It's fun to look up what people are saying about playing card collecting.
The Internet makes magic disappear
By Santiago Wills In 1998, my father riffled a red deck of playing cards while we attended a family reunion on the outskirts of Bogota, Colombia. He asked me to pick one, and I told him to stop when his fingers reached the middle of the pack.

Some I have known awhile, others I just found.

Want to find out more about card collecting? These links can help.
Chicago Playing Card Collectors, Inc.
Warning! This site plays music on its site, so turn down your volume if you click on it. This group is great. I have been to one of their conventions, where they sell and trade singleton cards with each other. Also, if you are in the group, you get a free newsletter PLUS get to trade with the members by mail. This is a great old-fashioned kind of club where you can make friends.
52 Plus Joker Club
This club is made of people who collect card decks, from old to new, from advertising decks to animal decks. This group also has an annual convention, and are very nice to new members. They also have a newsletter too, with an opportunity to bid on deck auctions.
