Some Of The Best Toys Are The Simplest Ones

I love toys that will enthrall a child and her friends for hours.

It may sound like a rehashed cliche, but sometimes I long for the simpler things of my childhood. The toys, games and activities that captivated us then were simpler, cheaper and kept us interested for much longer than those of today.

We Called Them Jacks

How Is It Played?

I remember using five "jacks". You start with one, toss it in the air, catch it on the back of your hand, toss it again, and catch it in your palm. As you succeed in each round you increase the number of "jacks" you throw. You are out and pass to the next player when you drop the "jacks". Here is how playing "knucklebones" or "jacks" is defined in Wikipedia:-

"Knucklebones also known as hucklebones, dibs, dibstones, jackstones, chuckstones or five-stones, is a game of very ancient origin, played with five small objects, originally the knucklebones of a sheep, which are thrown up and caught in various ways. Modern knucklebones consist of six points, or knobs, proceeding from a common base, and are usually made of metal or plastic. The winner is the first player to successfully complete a prescribed series of throws, which, while of the same general character, differ widely in detail. The simplest consists in tossing up one stone, the jack, and picking up one or more from the table while it is in the air; and so on until all five stones have been picked up. Another consists in tossing up first one stone, then two, then three and so on, and catching them on the back of the hand. Different throws have received distinctive names, such as riding the elephant, peas in the pod, and horses in the stable."

Knucklebones From History

An Ancient Game

This statue is located in The Louvre in Paris. Described as "Nymph with a shell. Marble, Roman copy of the 1st century CE after the known Hellenistic type of a young girl playing a game of knuckle-bones. The head is antique but does not belong to the statue; left arm, right hand and shell are modern restorations, altering the original type." It is located in the Department of Greek, Etruscan and Roman Antiquities.

Jacks, Marbles, Jumprope, Elastics

There's a common thread here - they are all relatively cheap, all involve more than one player and can be played over and over again!

I've never played knucklebones, but I believe my husband did as a child. I don't think I'm coordinated or fast enough for that one!

I loved playing knuckles as a child and feel sad that these simple games are no longer popular.
