Come to think of it, if you were invited to play, it would be a wonderful opportunity to enjoy time with your child, as well as to pass on a few lessons about fire safety. It would be totally natural to talk about danger of open fires, stoves, lighters, etc. One of the great aspects of the Fire Station is that it allows parents to teach children important safety lessons without sounding like parents. During play, children are much more receptive to receiving information and learning new things. And parents get to have fun too.

If your child invites friends to play, the games take on a whole new meaning. They are no longer just flights of imagination, and exercises in manual dexterity. Now they become an opportunity to practice social skills - cooperation, organization and division of tasks, negotiations, and even an occasional compromise - who will drive the engine, who will operate the water pump - this a wonderful practice for the grownup world. Kids need to learn these skills anyway - better that they learn them while playing.

Playmobil manufactures its toys in the countries of the European Union, where quality control and safety are considered important and standards are enforced. It's wonderful to see a big, multinational corporation that takes seriously its responsibility for product safety.

Girls Like Fire Trucks Too

I find it really cool that girls love the fire engines too. I have seen my daughter play with them, watch in delight when a real one passes bye, and demand that a new fire engine be provided for her amusement on regular basis. The firefighters get a workout too. They climb walls - not just houses, but garage structures, plastic towers, wooden block castles - there is no job too insignificant for her firefighters. They also do a double duty in the bathtub - it's normal for them to float around all weekend long in the tub, while she brings in new cars, plastic plates, plastic bottles and boxes - anything that will float, so the firefighters get to hop from one object to another. As she walks back and forth along the edge of the tub, she leans in and uses plastic plates to generate waves that knock off other toy figure into the water. Then firefighters get to rescue them. If the figures float down to far for her to reach, we get called in as a special rescue unit (she still has not figured out that if she leans in and makes enough waves, the figures will eventually float back to her). It usually is a plastic cat, or a wooden dog that ventured too far into the water hazard. Often we don't let her use the bathtub, since running back and forth from her room to the bathroom carrying bottles full of water and wet toys tends to leave a lot of water trails on the carpets. She sighs, and pulls out a big plastic box that housed her building blocks, and turns it into a portable lake - the firefighters still get a workout.
