Learn how to play a musical instrument

Many years ago, when I was still a teenager, I managed to buy a guitar. There was nobody to teach me how to play it, so I listened to the radio and taught myself to pick the melody as I listened to a variety of Rock and Country songs.

It was years later that I bought some books on how to play a guitar and discovered chords, tablature, and music theory.

My guitars and banjos have been a joy and comfort to me, and you'll often hear me playing my guitar while I'm thinking through a tough project or idea.

However, as much as my friends liked hearing me play guitar and banjo, that's how much they were happy when I gave my violin away.

Everyone should learn to play music, even if it's just a kazoo. Music calms the savage beast, and you, too.

My Three Favorite Guitars

Top quality acoustic guitars

Over the years, I've played a variety of guitars, both acoustic and electric. These are my three favorite guitars:

Gibson J-45 Historic Acoustic-Electric Guitar Vintage Sunburst

From the blues to bluegrass to folk to pop and everything in between, the J-45 is one of the most played and cherished guitars in history. Solid Sitka spruce top and solid Honduras mahogany back and sides produce unmatched mellow, full-bodied tone.

Martin D-28 Dreadnought

The D-28 has a solid Sitka spruce top with glossy finish, special East Indian rosewood for the polished back and sides, and genuine ebony for the fingerboard and bridge. With its rich, resonant warmth and punchy volume, the D-28 is particularly well-suited to music styles requiring loud, powerful rhythm accompaniment. Includes Martin deluxe hardshell case and limited lifetime warranty.

Martin Backpacker Steel

Don't let its diminutive size fool you. A braced, solid tonewood top with a solid mahogany neck, back, and sides gives this cool little guitar a surprisingly big projection. Built to withstand the rigors of camping, hiking, and off-road traveling. Includes high-quality chrome-enclosed tuners. A unique bridge on the nylon-string version accepts either plain or ball-end classic strings. Weighs less than 2-1/2 lbs.

I need to get another guitar - I too learned to play when I was a teenager, and wrote a lot of songs over the years. I keep a recorder here on my desk for those odd moments when I need to do something besides computing.

Hi John, Excellent music book resource you have here. I did take formal lessons on piano, french horn, and trumpet. But, I am 99.9% self taught on guitar, bass, and vocals. I agree that music is a balm for the soul. Music is a great hobby and a fulfilling profession. ~Music-Resource~
