Buying the PlayStation Move Bundle
What to avoid (learn from my mistakes)
It was late November, and I was in the mode to impulse buy. Since I desperately needed a Blu-Ray player, a friend tipped me off that I might as well just buy the PlayStation 3 and use it for that purpose...beyond that, the system has a few games I'd probably be interested in. It sounded like a win-win. With all of the Black Friday deals going on, I heard of several promotions, and wound up going with Kmart's special promo: buy the $400 unit and get $50 toward PlayStation 3 games. Sounded cool enough, so I went for it.I don't want this to be a review of Kmart.com, but I have to say, I think their service SUCKS. The experience I went through was a God-awful nightmare. It started when they automatically shipped it to the address on my credit card (which I did NOT want, but wasn't given a chance to correct on the website), to when I had to argue with customer support. The box arrived opened on top, because the shipper only used one strip of tape that didn't even wrap around the sides of the box. Unacceptable. To make matters worse, the PS3 itself was damaged and ate the demo disc (I'll get to that later in the review). Just infuriating.
After having to re-package the entire PlayStation Move Bundle, I took it to the local Kmart and got my money back. I then re-purchased it directly through Sony.com. Since I have a Sony Card, I got 5x points on the $400 purchase, giving me 2,000 points that could be used to redeem one newer-title PS3 game. I will never buy a high ticket item like this from a store like Kmart.com ever again, that's for sure.
Even more curious: I gave them a professionally written, full negative review directly on the product page. They conveniently didn't publish it. Hmm.
Unpackaging the PS3
Two boxes in one!
The thing that surprised me about this unit is that the box you see on the outside (the white and blue box, showing the PS3 and PlayStation Move components) is the only time you will EVER see anything even mentioning the Move within it. There's another box inside of this box (see the gray one above), which is simply the standard PS3 box. I was almost expecting the Move components to not be included.
Err, What About the PlayStation Move?
Worst manual ever
What really took me back after unpackaging everything AND reading the manual is that there wasn't even a single mentioning of the PlayStation Move either on or in this box. The manual doesn't tell you what to do with it or how to set it up. I found this to be incredibly bizarre and unacceptable, especially since I've never had a PlayStation before and am not familiar with the setup.I had absolutely no idea how to set up the PlayStation Eye, nor how to calibrate it. None of this was explained in the manual. The manual didn't even have that obligatory first page that shows a diagram and description of everything that's in the box.

Setting up the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Eye
Making due, due to a bad manual
A friend of mine is a PS3 enthusiast, and I wound up calling him to help get everything set up. It turns out that the cable for the controllers is simply used to charge up the PS3 and Move controllers (they're wireless, which I knew, but the manual doesn't explain much). Since you only get one of each controller, you have to shell out another $XX amount of money to buy a second PS3 controller and Move controller, as well as a Navigation Controller of which you'll undoubtedly buy at some point, anyway. The PS3 itself only comes with two USB ports, and one of them will permanently get used up by your PlayStation Eye, which will take residence above or in front of your HDTV. With that being said, you'll want to pick up a PS3 controller charger.
Unlike hooking peripherals up to a PC, the PlayStation 3 won't have any visual pop-up on the screen when you attach the Eye, so you'll have to manually calibrate it by finding the settings in the menu. This calibration process simply instructs you to hold the illuminated Move controller in several different angles, until you're instructed to stop.
Connecting Your PlayStation 3 to the Internet
Surprisingly a painless process
My biggest fear was the potential headache involved in getting my PlayStation 3 to connect to the internet, considering that it would have to be done through my Linksys router (of which had given me terrible frustration in connecting to my iPod Touch in the past). Surprisingly, all I had to do was write down the PS3's mac address from a settings menu into my router's whitelist and it was connected rather quickly - no issues whatsoever!
A Defective PlayStation 3
Yes, things got worse.

Well, I got the PS3 hooked up, the controllers charged and I registered with PlayStation's online gaming community. All that was left was to pop in the demo disc, and that's where things went terribly wrong. The PS3 seemingly did nothing for about a minute, then it started making noises like a racecar. They'd get really loud, then taper down, the get loud again and cut off entirely. The Game menu on the screen showed no information for a disc that was inserted. I tried to eject the disc, but it didn't come out. I had to shut the unit down, power it back on and eject. When I finally got the disc out, the edges were entirely eaten away. I don't think I've ever seen a chewed up Blu-Ray before, but there it was.
I went through these motions about four more times, knowing each time that it was defective, but was hoping I was wrong (after all, what are your chances of getting a defective PS3 - one in several thousand...or more?) Yup - it was defective and that's all there was to it. I had to package it all back up, and off to the store it went the proceeding day, for a full refund.
Conclusion
Gee, I'd really love to play a PlayStation 3 :/
- Note that the box and manual will say nothing about the PlayStation Move. It's absurd. So, you'll have to either get a knowing friend to help you or figure it out by playing around with the menu and using simple logic.
- The PlayStation Move controller is recognized by your PS3 in the same fashion as your PS3 controller was - simply connect the cable to it and press the circular logo button in the middle.
- The PlayStation Eye is USB-connected and installs through the PS3's main menu. Be sure to look for the calibration option.
- The $400 you spent on this thing is far from over: you'll also want a second PS3 controller and a 2nd Move controller, and most likely the Navigation controller and a charging station for all of the above.
- Don't buy your PlayStation through some cheapo thrift company, get it from a reputable source that actually knows how to package and ship things, like Amazon, Buy.com, Best Buy, or good old Sony themselves.
