Playstation 3 problems.

Ranked #471 in Games, #15,327 overall

Playstation 3 problems can be frustrating and expensive.

Playstation 3 problems can range from the yellow light of death (YLOD) to error codes and inability to read disks.
If you have ever experienced a PS3 problem and your warranty has run out, perhaps you know how expensive the repair bill from Sony can be.
Most of these problems are caused by overheating and can actually be a simple do it yourself fix. That is if you have the nerve to open your $300 game console.
But if the cost to repair your playstation 3 problem is higher than the price of a new console... tackling it yourself may be a viable option.

A list of the most common Playstation 3 problems and the cause.

  • The yellow light of death - This is a common playstation 3 problem usually caused by overheating that results in loose connections inside the console.

  • Ps3 turns on and plays but screen goes black - Also known as the black screen of death this can be caused by overheating of the graphics chip. This problem should be dealt with asap as the heat issues will cause further problems.

  • Will not read disc - This ps3 problem can be caused by the laser reader being misaligned. Other causes can be normal wear or a hardware failure.

Other common Plastation problems can include:

  • Freezing screen (during gameplay or menu)

  • Freezing blue ray.

  • Error codes.

3 things to try if you experience a problem.

With any Playstation 3 problem there are a few things you should check before assuming the worst.
  1. Of course the first thing you should do is check for loose cables and then restart your console.

  2. Secondly you should turn the power off and unplug and reseat all cables.

  3. Last thing to try is removing and reinstalling the hard drive.(See videos below)

A simple loose connection or improperly seated hard drive could be the cause of your ps3 problem.

Solve your playstation 3 problem.

If you tried the steps above and your playstation 3 problems persist you basically have 3 options.
  1. Send your playstation 3 back to the factory to have it repaired. If your ps3 is still under warranty they will repair it for free. Otherwise You will have to pay for the repair and believe me when I say it is not cheap. Either way it could take up to 6 weeks to get your ps3 back.

  2. Repair your ps3 yourself. This is really not as complicated as you may think and with the proper guide it can be achieved in a couple of hours.

  3. Go out and buy a new system and use your old console as a $300 paper weight.

There are many guides out there for fixing your ps3 problem but most of the ones I have seen center on the YLOD. There is one guide in particular that addresses all of the issues mentioned here and more. It is put together by a professional ps3 repairman that has dealt with most problems encountered by playstation owners.

I could go into detail about what is offered in the guide but instead I will let you see for yourself. Check it out by clicking HERE.

A friend of mine made extra cash repairing video game consoles.

I am not saying that you can do the same but I would like to tell you a story.

A couple of years ago, a college friend of mine would advertise in the local paper and some places online that he was buying used game consoles. He mostly only bought non-working consoles for cheap... I mean like 15 or 20 bucks a pop.

Well he was a whiz at fixing stuff and would take good parts from one and fix another. Then turn around and sell the working console for a decent profit. His big selling point was that he took trade ins. A broke ps3 would get you 15 bucks off the $90 selling price of his used one.

Now he bought and sold all types of consoles. Xbox, Wii and playstations as well. He was good at fixing stuff but what I liked about him the most is that he usually bought all the beer.
