Pleasanton CA

Ranked #5,358 in Travel & Places, #153,013 overall

Welcome to Pleasanton, CA

Drive east from San Francisco and over the Hayward Hills, and as you descend into the valley below, you will find Pleasanton. What was once a small town has grown into a thriving, affluent community. Its modern business park houses big buildings and big-name companies like Oracle and Robert Half, but the quaint downtown area with his early 20th-century architecture still harks back to an earlier era. Pleasanton's biggest claim to fame today may be as the home of former coach and NFL commentator John Madden, but it also once served as the background for the movie "Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm" and silent movies by Charlie Chaplin. We hope you enjoy this lens about Pleasanton.

Where the Heck is Pleasanton, CA?

Well, it's close to better-known places like San Francisco, Oakland and Berkeley

Unless you live in the San Francisco Bay Area, you've probably never heard of Pleasanton. And even if you do live in the Bay Area, you may only know it's "somewhere in the East Bay" because everything east of Oakland can get a little fuzzy for the big city and peninsula folks. But suburbanites who schlep to The City on BART every day will correctly recognize it as the final destination on the BART line heading east over the Hayward Hills. Here it is!

Five flicks that are currently playing near you

1. Men in Black 3 - $54.5M
The Men in Black are back, and this time Agent J (Will Smith) must take a trip into the past in order to save both the future and his taciturn partner Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones) in the third installment of the hit sci-fi comedy series. After 15 years of working with aliens from all across the cosmos, Agent J is sure he's seen it all. But just when he's getting the hang of the game, he learns that history has inexplicably been rewritten. In this new timeline of events, Agent K has been dead for 40 years, and Earth will soon come under attack from an extraterrestrial force with the power to claim the entire planet. Now, in order to set the past straight and head off an invasion of epic proportions, Agent J must travel back to the year 1969, when Young Agent K (Josh Brolin) was just a fresh new face on the force. But Agent J only has 24 hours to find the source of the coming catastrophe and discern how his longtime partner ties into the situation -- should he fail he'll be stuck in the past forever. Jemaine Clement, Alice Eve, and Emma Thompson co-star. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi
2. Marvel's The Avengers - $36.6M
Marvel Studios delivers the ultimate comic-book film, which ties together such characters as Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Captain America (Chris Evans), The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), and Thor (Chris Hemsworth) for a big-screen franchise team-up like no other. Taking center stage this time is Nick Fury (played once again by the note-perfect Samuel L. Jackson), leader of the peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D. Fury, along with former Russian spy Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), recruits a super team to combat Thor's ever-deceptive brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston) after he brainwashes ace archer Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) while stealing a cosmic cube from an underground base. Thus the heroes must learn to work together alongside outlaw scientist Bruce Banner (Ruffalo), who can track down the artifact's gamma signals when he's not hulking out into a giant green monster. Show runner Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly) adapted and helmed the script by Zak Penn. ~ Jeremy Wheeler, Rovi
3. Battleship - $11.0M
Milton Bradley's enduringly popular strategic board game makes the leap to the big screen in Hancock director Peter Berg's epic sci-fi adventure pitting an international naval fleet against an army of invading aliens. When the two forces find themselves evenly matched, each must rely on strategy and cunning in order to emerge the victor. Taylor Kitsch and Alexander Skarsgard head-up a cast also featuring Liam Neeson, Rihanna, Brooklyn Decker, and Tadanobu Asano. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi
4. The Dictator - $9.2M
Comic Sacha Baron Cohen re-teams with director Larry Charles (Borat, Bruno) for this satirical tale of an oppressive, democracy-hating dictator and a goatherder (both played by Cohen) whose misadventures in America lead to a series of outrageous culture clashes. Anna Faris, Ben Kingsley, and Curb Your Enthusiasm's J.B. Smoove co-star. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi
5. Chernobyl Diaries - $7.9M
An extreme vacation turns terrifying when a group of friends visit the Chernobyl disaster site, and learn that some nightmares never die. Conceived and produced by Paranormal Activity's Oren Peli, Chernobyl Diaries gets underway as six thrill-seeking tourists hire a fearless tour guide, and travel to the abandoned Ukrainian city of Pripyat. Back when the Chernobyl nuclear reactor was up and running, Pripyat was the place the workers called home. But 25 years after one of the worst power-plant accidents in history, the city serves as an eerily silent testament to the dangers of nuclear power. Later, after getting unexpectedly stranded in Pripyat, the tourists and their guide realize they are being hunted. Now the harder they try to flee, the faster their numbers dwindle until only a few are left standing. Only then will the unspeakable terror that stalks these deserted streets finally emerge from the shadows to launch one last relentless, terrifying attack. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

I grew up in Livermore, but lived in Pleasanton for a couple of years. The downtown area is my favorite, especially when there's a farmers' market or festival. I always run into people I know. Nicely done, and lensrolled to my Livermore lens.
