How to Please a Squid Angel

Or How to Please THIS Squid Angel

I became a Squid Angel earlier this month. The category that I have been given is "Hobbies, Games & Toys - Bicycles" although I am also allowed to bless lenses outside of this category. I have already blessed several lenses and dinged a couple too.

So what makes me decide to bless a lens and what might cause me to ding one? This lens will reveal my thoughts on what makes a good lens special.

If you believe your lens is worthy of a blessing from me, especially if it is within my allotted category, I will be delighted to hear from you.

Original Content

The first thing that I am looking for is interesting and original content. Ideally it will be content which has been written by you specifically for your lens. Usually I would expect that 50% or more of your lens will be made up of text which will be spread between several modules.

I understand that writers make spelling mistakes and grammatical errors at times (I make mistakes all of the time) but I would expect a bless-worthy lens to be proof read to a reasonable standard.

Use of Modules

I like to see people making use of the great variety of modules that Squidoo have made available. There is usually more than one way of achieving a result and I like to see lenses where the writer has used a little creativity.

Tip: Look through the modules available and try something different. You can always edit your work so if you are unhappy with the result it is not permanent.

Do Something Different

If your lens has an unusual topic or has a common topic portrayed in an unusual way I am far more likely to read your lens.

Pictures

People like pictures

Nicely taken photographs or well produced illustrations make such a big difference to a lens but they should be appropriate and tastefully used.

You don't need to have a picture in each module, but I always expect to see one in the introduction and usually others depending on the subject and the length of the lens.

It is always nice to see original pictures (like this one which I took of one of my pet chickens) but I understand that many writers are not photographers or graphic artists.

Advertising and Sales Modules

One of the great benefits of writing on Squidoo is that we can all earn some money. I am very pleased to see people using the money making facilities that Squidoo provides. I'm also happy to see people using Squidoo to promote other online interests.

I believe it important to give the reader more than just links to products to buy. I will ding a lens that is nothing but sales modules or that is clearly nothing more than a sales page.

I like to see plenty of interesting content with some appropriate sales modules included if desired.
Important!

Include a Guestbook

I would like to be able to tell you when I have blessed your lens. Please give me the opportunity by including a guestbook module.

Tell me about your lens

If you would like me to visit your lens tell me about it here. You may get some other people visit too.

You have provided some wonderful tips through this article, I have only been a member of this Squidoo community for a little over a month and I'm constantly learning as I move forward. I have built 7 lenses so far and currently working on 8 & 9, my pride and joy as of now is Avocado Health Benefits which I feel has been very beneficial to many.

I hope to build many more that can live up to your standards which seem very fair. Thanks for your time and have a great Valentine's Day.

Good tips. I often have wondered if my NFL Team lenses have been to sales/spammy. I've tried to add some intro content and decent highlight videos, with good schedule information, but am still not too confident with them. I plan on cleaning them up in the offseason and coming up with a better format for the 2012 season. Thanks for your thoughts. It definitely helps me know what to create/style.

Very interesting. Glad you made it as an angel. I applied for my wings a few weeks ago, but have not heard back.

    Hi Positive,

Thanks for blessing my lens about how to donate to charities for free. I wasn't sure what squid angels were or how blessing works and this was really helpful for me. Keep up the great work!

I'm still learning...

Visiting other people lenses and looking at them critically is the best way to learn how to create great lenses. I do it as a Squid Angel, but even if you are not yet a Squid Angel you could still look at other lenses for inspiration and Squid-like your favourites.
