Who was Plutarch?

Why are his writings important?

Ploutarchos of Chaeronea was a biographer, civil servant, politician, teacher, historian and philosopher. Born in Boeotia and educated in Athens he worked in the Roman Imperial Administration and was well aware of the need for philosophers to create and support practical applications of ethics and other aspects of philosophy to day to day living.

The topics covered in the Moralia include metaphysics biology ethics economics physics the supernatural and paranormal literature education famous women explanations of unusual Greek and Roman customs and critiques of philosophy. Ironically these critiques of concepts from the Stoic and Epicurean philosophers helped preserve part of their teachings after the original writings were lost.
