I love Plumeria! If you are a nut over this beautiful tropical tree too, then check out my lense.
Why the big craze over Plumeria?
More and more people are buying and growing Plumeria. You too may be thinking about getting one of these little guys. Here are a few reasons why they are such a great tropical plant.

One of the reasons Plumeria can be so addictive is the wonderful scent they produce. Not only do these flowers have a wonderfull smell but each type of tree is different! Some have a coconut scent, others have a spicy one, while others have a beautiful 'classical Plumeria scent'. One thing is for sure, they all smell great! How can anyone have just one plant when the next one might smell just a little bit better.
If the scent is not enough to get you the colors will. With so many colors to choose from, how can anyone just pick 1 color? They come in standard white, pink or red but that is just the beginning. Soon you will be thinking about the orange, yellow and the multitude of rainbow colors.
Well, once you get two, three or eight trees you will be happy to know that they are easy to take care of. Just give them lots of direct sunlight, keep the temps above 65 at night and around 80-90 during the day and your plants will grow like weeds. Plumeria are found in many tropical regions but they dont like to be kept in wet soil. A good watering when the soil becomes dry will keep your plants very happy. More articles will be posted that specifically deal with each aspect of growing and keeping your Plumeria healthy.
Planting Your Plumeria
The first step to a healthy Plumeria tree is getting it started the best way possible.
In this article we will discuss the best methods for planting Plumeria cuttings. The two most important things to remember is Water Sparingly and Good Drainage. Cutting often fail because of stem rot. This is completely within your control. Plumeria cuttings do not tolerate water very well. Until they have a well developed root system, they must not be watered very much. Once a root system is in place to draw up the moisture, watering can gradually be increased. The first step is good porous soil. Do not use dirt from the back yard or soil from the nursery. This stuff will hold in the water and become 'muddy'. Your cutting will not be happy with this. It is best to use a 3 or 4 part mixture that you can easily make yourself. A good combination is 1 part sand, 1 part perilite, 1 part composted bark, and 1 part cow manure. This will create a soil mix that quickly drains excess water but retains some moisture. Even a simple mix of 50% sand and 50% soil is usually sufficient.
Once you have planted your cutting into the mix, the next step is DO NOTHING. The is no reason to water your little plant for a couple of weeks. Unless it is very hot, do not water until the soil has become bone dry. They you can give a moderate watering. If the Plumeria cutting is in the house or it is still relatively cool out, just leave the plant alone if the soil has any moisture in it.
Of course at some point you will need to begin regular watering. This point comes when you have 3 or 4 well formed leaves (see picture). This tells you that the plant has developed a small root system and can accept a little more water. Each week increase watering a little more until you have a regular schedule going. Remember, Plumeria do not need lots and lots of water. Watering will depend on the time of the year. When it is hot and the plant is growing vigorously watering might be needed twice a day. During mild spring or late summer days once or twice a week might be sufficient. Bottom line, water the plant and when the soil becomes dry on top, water again. Follow these tips and your Plumeria cutting will be a happy and healthy one providing you will beautiful flowers each year.
