Plus Sized Bras

Anything and everything to know about plus sized bras from an experienced bra fitter.

What's the best strapless bra for plus sized women?

We get a lot of questions from frustrated large busted ladies about strapless bras. What works for their smaller busted friends just doesn't do the trick for them. They'll often resort to less than perfect solutions in order to show off their lovely shoulders in strapless dresses and other shoulder exposing clothes. Let's face it, though. Transparent bra straps are tacky. They may disappear at a distance of 100 yards, but anyone standing anywhere nearby can see them and they're often uglier than standard bra straps.

Fortunately, there are solutions available, but you've got to accept a couple of facts if you're a large busted woman:

1) Your boobs are heavier than your smaller busted friends'.

2) Your bra straps shouldn't be supporting your breasts anyway (unless you like permanent grooves in your shoulder)

The key to finding a strapless bra for a large busted woman lies in an understanding of how a bra should work in the first place. While every bra is not a shelf bra, most bras support breasts like a shelf. The underwire (or at least the bottom of the bra) acts as the shelf. Most women think that the bra's shoulder straps keep this shelf from falling down. In actuality, it's friction that keeps the shelf from falling.

Great Places to find plus sized bras

Our favorite spots on the web for plus sized bras.
  1. All Plus Size BrasThe most comprehensive site on the web for finding a plus sized bra. It allows you to search several different online vendors specifically by size. Available sizes currently range from 34D to 56J, but the site scans web inventory and updates daily.
  2. Hips and CurvesA great online store for all things plus sized. The lingerie here is a little bit trashy, but you can still find some great bras.

Recycling

Unfortunately, all bras wear out eventually. When the elastic gets stretched out and the bra doesn't fit properly anymore, it's time to stop wearing it! You don't have to throw your bras away, though. There are lots of great things you can do with your bras once they've worn out. You can donate them to a charity or even do fun craft projects. Plus size bras make great purses! Check out some cool ideas here.
