Australia are the new heavyweight champions of the world. The latest comprehensive study has shown that 26% of adult Australians - almost four million - are BBW's and BHM's - a staggering one million more than the last calculation in 1999.

Once again some pinheads have come up with a survey that draws the conclusion if you hang with chubby people, chances are you'll be overweight too.

An international study based on data on 27,000 people across Europe dubbed the phenomenon "imitative obesity" - or "keeping up with the Joneses" on calories.

Researchers suggest choices about appearance - on which decisions such as job offers or being deemed attracted - are based are determined by the choices others around you make. So, if people around you are fat, it is ok for you to be fat too.

Professor Andrew Oswald at the University of Warwick said: "Consumption of calories has gone up but that does not tell us why people are eating more. Some have argued that obesity has been produced by cheaper food, but if fatness is a response to greater purchasing power, why do we routinely observe that rich people are thinner than poor people?"

He said: "A lot of research into obesity, which has emphasised sedentary lifestyles or human biology or fast-food, has missed the key point. Rising obesity needs to be thought of as a sociological phenomenon not a physiological one. People are influenced by relative comparisons, and norms have changed and are still changing."

Hmmmmmmm It's strange that no one has bothered to do a survey to see if thin people are thin because they socialize with other twiggy types....

An Australian woman who beat a rare flesh-eating disease says she survived the terrifying ordeal only because she was
"fat."

Clair Robinson, 23, of Victoria, Australia, believes she is lucky to be alive after contracting the killer bacteria following surgery.

Robinson thought she had a simple fever and stomach ache until she was told it was flesh-eating bacteria eating through her stomach muscles and body tissue.

"Being big saved my life," she said. "If I had have been smaller it would have eaten my organs and my insides. My kidneys and liver would have been eaten if I hadn't have been big. Maybe fat people do have a good life after all."

Robinson contracted the condition, the clinical name for which is necrotising fasciitis after an operation to remove cysts from her ovaries. The bacteria is fatal in 50 percent of cases.

Why is it so hard to believe that many men aren't interested in a woman who's built like their kid brother. Men's magazine FHM did a survey with 60,000 responses. An astonishing 41 percent of respondents saying size 12 was the best, 39 per cent preferring size 14 and a measly 20 per cent going for a size eight. A staggering 100 per cent of men asked, all claimed that size eight was just too skinny and that a real woman had to have curves.

The painting of the great masters attest to the fact that "curves" were in vogue as far back as we can remember. In the good old days, artists and poets alike glorified curves on women. Flemish painter Peter Paul Rubens, whose appreciation of the more rounded female form gave us the word 'Rubenseque', once explained his artistic technique: "When their backsides look good enough to slap, there's nothing more to do."

Unfortunately, our society is fixated on thin, anaemic looking women. The outcome is that women want to be thinner than what men find attractive. Obviously, a man's idea of thin is larger than a woman's perspective.

She's one of our favorite big beautiful women. At 151 feet tall, (with her pedestal 305 feet) and weighing in at over 225 tons (450,000 lbs.), our Statue of Liberty is one of the world's best known full figured women..

The statue is of a robed woman holding a lit flame, and is made of a sheeting of pure copper, hung on a framework of steel (originally puddled iron) with the exception of the flame of the torch, which is coated in gold leaf (originally made of stained glass and lit from the inside.) It stands atop a rectangular stonework pedestal with a foundation in the shape of an irregular eleven-pointed star.

The people of France gave the Statue to the people of the United States over one hundred years ago in recognition of the friendship established during the American Revolution.

Sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi was commissioned to design a sculpture with the year 1876 in mind for completion, to commemorate the centennial of the American Declaration of Independence. The Statue was a joint effort between America and France and it was agreed upon that the American people were to build the pedestal, and the French people were responsible for the Statue and its assembly here in the United States. However, lack of funds was a problem on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. In France, public fees, various forms of entertainment, and a lottery were among the methods used to raise funds. In the United States, benefit theatrical events, art exhibitions, auctions and prizefights assisted in providing needed funds.

The Lady arrived in New York Harbor in June of 1885 on board the French frigate "Isere" which transported the Statue of Liberty from France to the United States. In transit, the Statue was reduced to 350 individual pieces and packed in 214 crates. The Statue was re-assembled on her new pedestal in four months time. On October 28th 1886, the dedication of the Statue of Liberty took place in front of thousands of spectators. She was a centennial gift ten years late.
