Wedding Dress Measurements

The first thing you want to make sure you do before you seriously look to buy your perfect wedding dress, is to get accurate measurements.

It is preferable to have a professional seamstress measure you, but I think that most people can get by with having a friend or relative measure them. Just keep these guidelines in mind:

Be sure to stand up straight with your arms relaxed down by your side.

Make sure you take your measurements in a good fitting bra and the underwear you will be wearing under the wedding gown.

1 BUST
Measure around the fullest part of the bust, keeping the tape measure parallel to the floor. Be careful not to pull too tight, but also don't let the tape become slack.

2 WAIST
Measure the waistline going over the belly button.

3 HIP
Measure 7-9" below the waist to find the fullest hip. Measure the fullest part of the hip, keeping the tape measure parallel to the floor, and again avoid pulling too tightly.

LENGTH MEASUREMENT GUIDE

DRESSES
Dress lengths are taken from the bottom of the clavicle hollow at the front of the neck to the bottom hem of the dress.

Standard floor length 58½". Extra length 63½"

SKIRTS
Skirt lengths without waistbands are taken from the center of the back, starting at the finished edge of the skirt.

Skirt lengths with waistbands are taken from the center back, starting at the bottom waistband seam.

Standard floor length 44½". Extra length 49½"

FYI: Please keep in mind that sizes on wedding dresses tend to run smaller than regular dresses. In other words, if you normally wear a size 18 dress a size 18 wedding gown will probably fit too tight or not at all. It is best to err on the side of too big and altering it to take it in, than too small and altering to make bigger.

Wedding Shoes - 5 Things to Consider For the Plus Size Bride.

I know one thing I wish I would have put more thought into for my wedding, was my
wedding shoes.

I had found a very pretty pair of satin, ballet style flats (I'm tall and my husband, well... not so tall). I did try them on and they did fit, but I didn't really consider the fact that I was going to be spending an awful lot of time on my feet, walking down the aisle, the exchanging of vows, dancing at the reception, etc... . Not only that, but when you're a plus size bride it is even more taxing to be on your feet for long periods of time, especially in the wrong shoes.

With that in mind, here are some tips to help you choose your wedding day shoes wisely.

1. If you have never worn high heels in your life, your wedding day is not the best time to try it out. Yes they are pretty, but there are plenty of flat and low heel shoes that are just as beautiful.

2. About ten days or so before the big day, put on your new shoes and walk around in them a little each day to break them in. Don't wear them to go shopping or anywhere where they could get dirty or damaged, just around the inside of your house.

3. Consider adding a pair of orthopedic insoles to your wedding shoes. They now have some that blend really well into open toe or sandal style shoes.

4. It might be a good idea to take along an extra pair of shoes that you already wear and that you know are comfortable. Change into them at the reception if you plan on doing a lot of high steppin'.

5. Don't forget to choose appropriate shoes for the venue of your wedding. Outdoors in a grassy area that has moisture could stain certain shoes.(Not to mention the bottom of your dress). Same goes for the beach.

You can definitely find the perfect pair of shoes for your wedding that will be stylish, and comfortable. You can have both if you plan ahead.

Preserving Your Wedding Dress.

After you have spent careful and thoughtful consideration into your wedding gown purchase, it is a good idea to also consider how to best preserve it.

It is recommended that you have your wedding dress be professionally cleaned and stored as soon as possible after the wedding. You should seek out an expert dry cleaner or wedding gown preservationist.

Stains that you don't see right away will soon begin to harm delicate fabrics. White wine, champagne, and body oil stains may not be noticeable right away, but they will turn the fabric yellow if your dress isn't cleaned promptly and properly.

Make sure when you take your dress to be cleaned that you point out any known stains, or if there any adornments that are not sewn on that may fall off during cleaning.

After your dress has been cleaned make sure you handle it with the cleanest hands possible. You may even want to use a pair of clean cotton gloves.

Do not hang your dress - over time gravity will cause your dress to become misshapen.

Only use an acid free box to store your wedding gown (ask your cleaner for one).

Carefully fold your wedding gown to avoid wrinkling.

Use acid free tissue paper to insert between the creases and folds of your dress.

Make sure that you store your gown in a neutral temperature environment. Extreme cold, heat, and humidity can damage your wedding dress.

It is also recommended that you take your wedding dress out once a year to inspect for missed stains, and also to let air circulate through the fabrics to prevent mustiness. Your wedding anniversary is a perfect time to do this.

With proper care in the beginning, you will be preserving not only a wedding dress, but a treasured memory that you can one day pass down with pride.
