Plymouth Roadrunner - The Muscle Car Defined
Perhaps no car represents the definition of muscle car better than the Plymouth Roadrunner. As muscle cars started to gain all sorts of expensive options in the late 1960's, Plymouth decided to make a car that would bring muscle cars back to their roots - a bare bones, no frills car with a big engine. The target consumer was young people without a lot of money but a desire to go fast. They achieved just that with the Roadrunner in 1968. It sold for less than $3000 and it could run the quarter mile in less than 14 seconds.
There was a high performance variation on the 1970 Plymouth Roadrunner called the Plymouth Superbird. It featured a coned front end and a huge wing in the rear. This car was raced on the NASCAR circuit. The Roadrunner was redesigned in 1971 and by 1976 it was downsized to accommodate a renewed interest in more fuel efficient cars.
