Plywood Boat Building Made Easy
Learning plywood boat building skills so you can create your own plywood boat at home is much easier than most people realize. Long known as a great wood for making a boat, using plywood is not only economical, but fun to work with.
Not only is plywood a great wood to work with, it matches very well with the boat epoxy that you will be using to fill the seams and make your boat truly waterproof. Because of the forgiving nature of the plywood and the epoxy, this is a very forgiving way to create a boat in your garage or backyard.

Plywood Boat Building | Simple Steps to Success
You do not have to be a master woodworker to successfully build your own plywood boat. Here are some very simple steps to ensure your boat does not take on water!
-
Get Your Tools in Order - For your plywood boat, you should make sure you have the following tools readily available to use: Good quality handsaw for cutting, complete assortment of drill bits with a power drill, screwdriver set, carpenters square, level, hammer and wire cutters.
If you don't have any of these tools, don't worry, they are not expensive, and chances are your neighbor will not mind if you borrow his for a few hours anyway. - Plywood Selection - Not all plywood is created equal, and while you can use normal builders grade plywood for your boat, you will need to cover it and coat it to make sure it maintains integrity. However, marine grade plywood, which is only slightly more expensive, is a ready to go wood that will perform very well for your boat building project.
- Sealing and Gap Filing - The best choice for you to use for this part of the process is using epoxy. However, good epoxy can be expensive so you can use other wood bonding agents, but your results will not be as good. Expect to spend about as much on epoxy as you do everything else for the project. But, at the end of the day, your boat will last well into the future when done right.
-
Plywood Boat Building - Finally, you need the right set of plans for your boat project. Make sure your drawings and prints that you get to build your boat are clear, easy to read, and have measurements that you can easily copy from.
I prefer using drawings that also have written step by step instructions with them so I can reference both the drawing and the writing.

Classic Plywood Stitch & Glue Boat Building
Most people use a very traditional method to building plywood boats called "stitch & glue". This process is where you are using the plywood to form the shape of the boat, and holding it in place (or stitching it in place) with screws to maintain the shape. Then, when you have the shape you want, you seal and glue together the boards at all joints and seams using epoxy or some other form of wood glue that will give you the best bonding ability for those surfaces.
It is important that you also pay close attention to any "three point mating" surfaces, for example the bow of the boat, to ensure your seals are tight and complete in all directions and on all three points. It is these areas that seem to cause the most difficulty for boat builders, so be sure you take your time with these areas.
