Ten Things You Gotta Love About the Pacific National Exhibition PNE Vancouver

Wasn't this year's 2010 PNE Vancouver's 100th Anniversary fabulous? I especially enjoyed our hometown Vancouverite, Bryan Adams' homecoming concert at Empire Stadium with the Beach Boys. The weather was picture perfect -- sunny, no rain -- so un-PNE.

YouTube Video Bryan Adams at Empire Stadium
Adams, a true Vancouverite at heart mentioned during the concert about getting phone calls from friends wondering "Do you think it's gonna rain"? Here's a YouTube clip where Adams clearly happy to be home, talks about "the blue skies and the mountains in the distance."

This year's PNE Summer Night Concerts featured a terrific line-up of performers on the PNE Concert Stage -- all free with admission. This year featured not one but two of Vancouver's most popular homegrown rock 'n roll talent with Loverboy on August 24 and Trooper closing the 2010 PNE Summer Concerts on September 6. The Guest Services booth has a map with a daily schedule of events.

The 2010 PNE Summer Night Concerts included Kevin Costner & Modern West, Terri Clark, Michael Bolton, Loverboy, Huey Lewis and the News, Wayne Newton, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Marianas Trench, Spirit of the West, John Hiatt and the Combo & Los Lobos, Annual Evening With Elvis, Jesse Cooke, Little River Band, Cyndi Lauper, Steven Page and The Road Hammers.

Summer is the Superdogs PNE show, the smell of fried onions, barbecue chicken, people screaming on the PNE wooden rollercoaster, rock music blaring on Playland rides & the incongruous sights of people carrying magic mops and shammys with smiles in abundance.

My grandma used to live in East Vancouver relatively close to the Pacific National Exhibition and there would always be one of my cousins or someone to hang out with to enjoy the Fair at the PNE. With school just around the corner, it would be our last chance to enjoy the sweetness of summer.

#1. Those Little Donuts at the PNE

PNE Vancouver 2010 Fair Food

Since 1968, Those Little Donuts have been serving up these sugary, cinnamony delights. A couple of years ago, owner Steve Johnson switched the deep fry oil from hydrogenated vegetable oil to a canola oil that has no trans-fat, no cholesterol and is low in saturated fat. Just like when McDonald's went trans-fat-free with their fries, I miss bad fat & the chance to clog my arteries. I suppose that means I could just eat more of 'em.

#2. C-Lovers Fish & Chips at the PNE

PNE Vancouver 2010 Fried Foods

With Canada's history, fish and chips are as big here as they are in Britain. We like our fries drenched in malt vinegar or gravy and being on the West Coast, Vancouverites know their preference for cod or halibut and are willing to shell out a little extra for it. The long lines are a testament to the fabulosity of C-Lovers Fish & Chips.

#4. Nature Sanctuary at the PNE

PNE Vancouver 2010

Many people are unaware of the nature Sanctuary at the PNE which is open all year round to enjoy. It's a quiet respite to get away from the hustle and bustle of the PNE crowds to stop and enjoy a picnic lunch, cool drink or snack. It's great for families as the PNE allows you to bring food on site and the Sanctuary offers park benches, viewpoints and a walking path for all visitors to enjoy.

PNE Vancouver 2010

Thrilling fairgoers for over 50 years, the rickety ascent of the PNE's original wooden rollercoaster continues to draw afficianados from all over the world who appreciate this coaster's steepest drop which on gravity alone can reach speeds of up to 45 mph.

When you go down the first steep hill, the only thing that's keeping you strapped onto your seat is a horizontal bar. You kind of lift off your seat a bit when you fly down that first hill. When you ride the PNE rollercoaster or any rollercoaster for that matter, especially old wooden ones...

Rain at the PNE

Check the PNE Weather Forecast

It's Raining, It Must Be PNE Time. Vancouverites know that after a long, hot summer, you can always count on there being rain during the PNE. It's a Vancouver tradition. You get all excited about going to the Fair & rain strikes. Good news is when it rains, lines are shorter and it's less crowded.

There's still plenty to do inside at the PNE, even when it rains like visit the Marketplace, Superdogs show, Home Depot showcase, livestock buildings and more. Also visit the fountains at the Italian Gardens, at the top of the Pacific National Exhibition site which were designed with Vancouver's rain fall in mind and are said to be most beautiful in the rain.

No sir. There is no way to get into the fair except during their freebee day or if you're a student. The fact u cant use your BC Gold Card is the PNEs and BC Casino's biggest mistake. People will spend more money if they get in for free or with some type of program like the casino card. Without it, people will be going to other casions and buying food and refreshments there. The PNE is insanely expensive this year, especially with Vegas acts like Wayne Newton. U know he wasn't cheap. And look at the price of food, perogies or fish and chips: $12? That's insane. Nope, except for opening free day I wont be visiting the fair more than once, unlike unlike previous years.
