Estimate the severity of pneumonia with the Pneumonia Severity Index

The pneumonia severity index (PSI) Gadget helps assess the severity of pneumonia with a well established and validated tool. The PSI has been used to determine which patients can be treated safely as outpatients, and identify those with the highest risk of death due to pneumonia.

Risk stratification with the PSI has been shown to be an effective way to identify individuals who can be safely treated for pneumonia outside of a hospital.

The Pneumonia Severity Index Gadget is a Google Desktop mini-application that can be placed anywhere on your computer desktop or in a sidebar organizer to provide ready access to medical information.

The Pneumonia Severity Index Gadget requires the free Google Desktop, and will run on Windows and MacOS computers.

About the Pneumonia Severity Index

The Pneumonia Severity Index (PSI) is also known as the PORT Score.

This calculation was derived from the MedisGroup Cohort Study for 1989. This study included nearly 40,000 patients from 257 hospitals and identified factors that helped predict the 30 day risk of death for individuals admitted to a hospital for pneumonia.

Factors such as age, gender, co-morbid illnesses, vital signs, laboratory findings, and other were identified as risk factors for death due to pneumonia. These factors were validated in subsequent studies with the PSI, and can divide patients in to five risk classes.
