A Way to Carry Departed Loved Ones in a Pocket

The recent series of celebrity deaths has brought a new way to grieve and remember someone who has died with your iPhone to light.

The Pocket Cemetery is an application that has been available for iPhone for some time. With this application people can create virtual memorials on their iPhone to remember their friends, family, pets and anyone else who has died. According to their website the Pocket Cemetery also allows users to place virtual flowers on graves and send personal prayers and messages to dead loved ones.

The sentiments seem to be mixed regarding the Pocket Cemetery app for the iPhone with many of the technology people weighing in on the side that it is another way to exploit those who are grieving.

While it might seem unusual from a technology perspective, Pocket Cemetery is not that unusual as a way to cope with death. This application just uses new technology to manage an age-old problem, grieving the loss of a loved one.

Inspiration Behind the Pocket Cemetery

I was thinking of my grandparents and other deceased relatives buried in different cemeteries around the country. I also thought of pets I've lost over the years. I thought how I'd like to visit their graves on a regular basis, but it's simply impossible.

That's when the idea hit me. If I could carry the memories of departed loved ones on my iPhone, I could pay my respects whenever I feel like it.

Even though they're buried in different places and some have even been cremated, I wanted to find a way to bring them all together.

A New Way to Grieve

My Thoughts on the Pocket Cemetery

While this noted by the company to be an unusual application, I am not sure I would agree as a Thanatologist (Death Educator) with the current buzz from the technology and iPhone reviewers that this application is just another way to prey on the grieving.

If you consider the price tag with their introductory sale of $1.99 or their regular price of $2.99 this app is actually less than the price of a cup of coffee or many sympathy cards. With the features that it provides--creating personalized headstones, sending messages to departed loved ones and finding a way to bring departed loved ones together in a Virtual Cemetery--the Pocket Cemetery might actually bring a lot of comfort to someone coping with a death.

This iPhone app is an interesting way of applying technology to help someone cope with the loss of a loved one or cope with a celebrity death.

Michael Jackson Memorial IPhone Pocket Cemetery

We've created a virtual gravesite for Michael Jackson on the new Pocket Cemetery IPhone application. Even though Michael's life was filled with controversy, he will always be the King of Pop. He's a true icon of entertainment and he will be missed by millions.

The Pocket Cemetery IPhone app is scheduled for release sometime in July, but we felt we had to create a memorial for Michael on this sad day of his unexpected passing. Rest In Peace Michael.

Meanwhile, GSC is planning updates for the app, including the ability to order real flowers to be delivered to graves in the real world. Wayne Perry remarked:

We're all so busy these days and it's easy to forget to pay your respects to dead loved ones even when you think of them often.

I feel so bad that it's been ten years since I laid flowers on my grandmother's grave, but with this application I can send her flowers and pay my respects whenever the feeling hits me. It makes me feel closer to my departed loved ones.
