Choosing a Pod Coffee Maker

It seems like everyone has jumped on the one-cup bandwagon, so there are now dozens of different systems for you to choose from.

Given the higher price of pod coffee making systems...

consumers are wise to spend some time educating themselves about the models that are available and the pros and cons of each before shopping to buy. Senseo introduced the first one-cup coffee maker, and since that time, many other companies have developed their own versions of the newest technology in coffee making. You will find offerings from companies you've known about for years, including Black & Decker, Bunn, and Cuisinart. So how do you go about choosing the pod coffee making system that's right for you?

Start by considering the different features that you can buy on various one-cup models. Some of the things you need to think about are:

The length of time it takes to brew a cup of coffee. Some machines have low wattage which means brewing will take substantially longer.

The temperature of the water being brewed. Can you change it if necessary?

The number of ounces in each cup brewed. Can you change this in order to produce different-sized cups? If you always use the same cups, this probably won't matter.

Pod selection. Some coffee makers use standard pods so that you have a wide selection of coffees and teas, and others are limited to just a handful of different kinds.

Does the coffee maker have an automatic shut-off so that you can't inadvertently leave the pot on and head off to work? Don't you just hate it when this happens!

What does the coffee maker look like? Is it sleek and modern or heavy and clunky-looking, or is all you're interested in the best possible cup of coffee?

You need to decide which of these features you want to have in the pod coffee making system you buy and then zero in on those models. Keep in mind, however, that the more high-end features you want, the more expensive the system will be. Reading online reviews about the various coffee makers can be truly enlightening as people share their experiences using the different models. You'll find that even striped-down, basic machines can brew great cups of coffee and that some of the brands you've learned to rely on don't really make the best one-cup systems.

If you're trying to keep the price down, consider the options for pods that you can use with any given coffee maker. Some pods will cost you as much as $.50 a cup which is prohibitive for many people, and yet they still want that great cup of coffee. By purchasing a machine that heat-seals your own coffee into filters for around $50, you can make your own coffee pods for about $.22 a cup which is a substantial savings. However, you need to make sure you choose a pod coffee maker system that you can use the homemade pods with.
