Sack LunchBy Mary Jo Garascia
I put my carry-on in the luggage compartment and sat down in my assigned seat. It was going to be a long flight. I'm glad I have a good book to read. Perhaps I will get a short nap, I thought.
Just before take-off, a line of soldiers came down the aisle and filled all the vacant seats, totally surrounding me. I decided to start a conversation. 'Where are you headed?' I asked the soldier seated nearest to me. ' Great Lakes Air Base. We'll be there for two weeks for special training, and then we're being deployed to Iraq .'
After flying for about an hour, an announcement was made that sack lunches were available for five dollars.

A Page From The Life
Written by Sue Charles
This was a typical week, loaded with appointments that involved from 30 minutes to an hour drive to get to: Monday and Thursday for physical therapy, speech therapy on Tuesday and Thursday, see the surgeon on Wednesday. That left time to purchase the special hightop shoes and get measured for the leg braces that would attach to the shoes. The appointments were deliberately scheduled for afternoons, because there was pre-school in the mornings.
Although she was being scheduled for surgery on both legs in the next three months, our 5 year old daughter was accustomed to the intense routine that kept us busy with school and appointments five days a week. This was "normal" life for her, and for us as a family. Then, of course, the weekends were busy with Community and Church activities.
When the new baby arrived, he was bundled up and went to every pre-school class, every appointment, every therapy session, every fitting, every church service and community event.
Now, at two years of age, he joined in with activities at pre-school and exercises at therapy. He was a constant source of joy and distraction for his sister, especially during those not-so-pleasant therapy stretches of her legs. He was a joy and amazement to us because he just did things, without therapy. He crawled, walked, ran, talked and fed himself! We watched him in shear amazement.
As I showered, dressed and headed for the kitchen, I remembered when our daughter was less than a year old. We were given a heart-wrenching announcement. The specialist coldly stated that our precious baby would never walk, talk, or function is any capacity. He recommended that we "place her in an institution and forget about her". Was he crazy! We could never do that!
That was 38 years ago. That precious baby grew up to be a wonderful, loving and caring person. She still lives at home with us. She brings sunshine and beauty into our lives and countless others. Yes, she has limited abilities. She also has many abilities that none of the rest of us has.
Yes, it has been difficult. But what a small trade-off for the joy and love that is returned - unconditionally. How many lives have been helped by her smile and her simple "I love you", we will never know. But one thing I know for sure is that Heaven knows. Because Heaven sent her to us, and watches over her. We are truly blessed! sc/gprwa
