Printfection has mugs, bottles, and can covers! Yeah, I know I'm late to the party. They change/add new stuff so infrequently I don't check there as often as I should, and I missed a really good coupon on these.

New Improved Aprons in 3 New Colors at CafePress

CafePress has come out with new aprons, which look like much better quality than the old ones. They are larger, made of 100% cotton, and come in four colors: white, khaki, yellow, and navy. If you had the old aprons the new lighter colors will be added to your shop automatically, but the Navy aprons will need to be manually added to your shop (since those require a transparent background). The base price has gone up $2, but this is one case where I think the quality improvements justify that. Scroll down below for some examples. They do have pockets though it's not obvious from the pictures.

Now, Zazzle also has aprons, so I thought I'd do a little comparison of the two (based soley off of their products descriptions, since I've bought neither CafePress nor Zazzle's):

CafePress Aprons
100% heavy cotton twill
Comes in 4 colors
Comes in 1 style
Size: 32" long & 29.5" wide
Price:
* Light aprons: $16.99 ($22 in marketplace)
* Dark apron: $17.99 ($22 in marketplace)

Zazzle Aprons
35% cotton / 65% polyester blend, twill fabric
Comes in 3 colors
Comes in 3 styles
Sizes and Prices:
* Standard: 24" x 28" - $19.95 ($17.95 after 10% commission)
* Long: 30" x 24" - $21.95 ($19.75 after 10% commission)
* Kids: 20" x 15" - $15.95 ($14.35 after 10% commission)

New Avery Binders at Zazzle

Zazzle has added Avery Binders to their product selection. I was really excited about this until I found out about the price. $18.95 just seems like a lot for a plastic binder, even a customizable one. Even at their lowest bulk rate ($14.21), they are not cheep. But at least you can get free shipping on them through October 31 with coupon code BINDERLAUNCH.

More New Products at Zazzle!

Zazzle just added stationery, letterhead, flyers, rack cards, and several shapes and sizes of invitations! They also have a promotional coupon for free shipping on stationary: NEWPAPERSHIP (ends 9/30/09).

New Photo Cards at Zazzle

Zazzle has added Photo Cards (wait...didn't they already have these? No...not THOSE. Those are greeting cards and note cards. THESE are the flat, non-folded kind that are popular around Christmas time). Just take a look below to see what people are doing with these...

Change of CafePress Terms - Loss of Control for Artists?

CafePress has quietly made changes to it's terms that could have profound affects for artists who sell products through the marketplace. The following article at Irregular Times says it much better than I could, so I will just refer you there:

Artistic and Ethical Disaster: CafePress Removes Designer and Product Discretion. Take Control of Your Destiny. Get Off the Marketplace!

CafePress Shopkeeper Sale

Now through August 27, 2009 at 11:59 pm (PST) get 20% off products purchased through your own shop at CafePress. No coupon is required--the discount is automatically applied when you purchase products from your own shops.

There's a few limits. It excludes create and buy, Flip Minos, SIGG bottles, CD, button, magnet or mini-button orders (singles or multi-packs), and bulk orders. Total discount available per order for (i) ornaments is $10; (ii) greeting card 10 pack is $15; and (iii) calendars is $24. Orders placed during the sale period may take up to three weeks to arrive, regardless of the estimated arrival dates displayed in the Cart and Checkout. For delivery prior to September 5, 2009 a shipping upgrade to Premium or 1 Day shipping is required.

UPDATE/CORRECTION Regarding Lead Found in ArtsNow KeyChain

I did a home lead test on a key chain I had printed through ArtsNow (the company formerly known as ArtsCafe which also runs ArtsCow). The test turned black, indicating over 50 ppm of leachable lead. I was wrong that this is a dangerous level. 50 ppm is roughly the lead level of regular dirt. This test only showed that it was above 50 ppm, not how high above this...so this test neither proved it was dangerous or safe. Because it was the highest level of lead that could be measured by the test, I assumed it was a dangerous level (doh...never assume!).

I have now heard back from ArtsNow regarding this, and here is what they said:

"Our key chains are made of Zinc, and all Zinc product contained lead. However, our product is up to the required European export safety standard.

I am collecting further data of containing lead, will get back to you later. Thank you."

The test I used was the Arbotex Lead Inspector Lead Test Kit.

Once updated you can select the color for your bib.

Edit HTML and CSS on Zazzle Shops!

...and other updates I missed.

I missed a biggie last month. One of the major complaints I hear about Zazzle is the lack of flexibility in shop design. Well, no more! Last month on the Zazzle blog (I am just now discovering) they announced that you will now be able to customize all the HTML and CSS of your store! Just one more reason I need to learn CSS!

From the same article I also missed the the news about a new flash image uploader, extra product style control options (more ways to limit what a customer can change a item to in the customization tool), and earnings report changes.

Zazzle Changing Up It's Bags

Zazzle has added several new bags and discontinued others.

The discontinued bags are...
- The Blue Striped Tote Bag
- The Accent Tote Bag
- The Beach Tote Bag (Drawstring)
- The Floral Tote Bag (Drawstring)
- The Classic Tote Bag (with the different colored bottoms and straps)

Though they announced the new bags by e-mail, I looked on their blog didn't find any mention - of the discontinued bags, so please forgive me if the names aren't exact because I had to rely on memory. If you are missing any of these styles you can find them at ArtsNow (and for much cheaper than Zazzle sold them...though ArtsNow has it's own issues).

But back to bags at Zazzle! What I believe was called the Two Tone Tote before is now called the Impulse Tote and comes in some new colors. They also still carry Embroidered Totes.

The new bags come at more reasonable prices (starting at $9.95 for the value tote) and lots more colors including solid dark colors.

The new bags are...

- Impulse Tote (Old bag in new trim colors: pink, yellow, baby blue, royal blue, navy blue, red, black and neutral)

- Jumbo Tote (In neutral, blue, navy, and black)

- Budget Tote (With straps in neutral, green, red, blue and black)

-Tiny Tote (In neutral, blue, navy, and black)

- Grocery Tote (In neutral, green, blue, and black)

- Organic Grocery Tote (In neutral)

CafePress Price Changes and Other Updates

The new marketplace price changes have begun. Prices will fluctuate, but you can see the initial starting prices here. Shopkeepers will get a flat 10% commission off marketplace sales (shop mark-ups remain unchanged).

In other news, a positive development for Premium shopkeepers: When someone orders from your shop, they will now see YOUR shop name and URL at the top of their order (not CafePress...which now is only branded at the bottom on the invoice). They are also moving the CafePress logo that used to be at the top of premium shops to the bottom, and offering premium shopkeepers a customized header. You can read more about all that here.

Major Changes at CafePress

YIKES! CafePress just announced some MAJOR changes in it's marketplace. Beginning June 1st hey will now be setting flat rate prices for everything in their marketplace and shopkeepers will earn 10% commission (this won't change anything in your shops--which will keep the same base prices and mark-ups you've set--but if you've Barrified your products this means you may be competing with your own products in the CafePress marketplace set at a lower price). If you want to see what your earnings will be in the new system compared to the old, you can compare them based on your current sales with JGoode's handy Commission Calculator.

They've also changed their search platform and algorithm which includes "This includes bringing the best designs to the front" and reducing redundant designs.

Read more on CafePress' announcement page here.

More on the CPSIA and PODS

This article on the CPSIA and Printed Products directly talks about the print on demand issue and how the CPSIA may affect it. (If you haven't yet heard about the CPSIA, read more in my earlier post on the subject.) I found that article through this post on Overlawyered, which has consistently been a good resource on the CPSIA.

More CPSIA Updates

CPSIA UPDATE:
Jana Eggers, CEO of Spreadshirt replied to the thread at the T-shrit forums about the CPSIA and fulfillment services. She said they did not plan to remove any children's products because of this. Daniel Slatkin of SBE Multi-Media said that they would be "removing all junior and baby items from our system" and would also "be putting disclaimers in all product descriptions explaining that due to the new CPSIA laws that are products are not tested for the use of children 12 and under." I don't know if he is changing or postponing those plans in light of the one year stay the CPSA put on enforcement of the CPSIA to give their taff "more time to finalize four proposed rules which could relieve certain materials and products from lead testing and to issue more guidance on when testing is required and how it is to be conducted." (See More Here) Senator Jim DeM

The CPSA has offered a stay of enforcement on most testing requirements until next year to give their staff "more time to finalize four proposed rules which could relieve certain materials and products from lead testing and to issue more guidance on when testing is required and how it is to be conducted." Meanwhile, Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC) is proposing legislation to amend the CPSIA. Read more about these recent changes HERE.

How Will the CPSIA Affect PODS?

On Feb 10th the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 starts to go into affect. This act makes new rules for the amount of lead and phthalates in children's products and toys and adds third party testing requirements.

I've found a lot of info about this (see my growing link list HERE) but not a lot on specifically how this may affect Print on Demand. All of the PODS are pretty closed-mouth about it so far. CafePress even took down the forum thread talking about CPSIA (probably because it's opening up the forums to political debate, and it deals with legal issues). Still, I'm very concerned as to how this will affect us and wish the PODS would made a comment. I have some speculations on changes this may cause. I'm certainly expecting some price increases on children's products (and maybe all products, as Shopkeepers can market almost any item as a children's product if they so choose, and that's something that is hard for the PODS to control or anticipate, so they may have to get testing done on everything). If the law is interpreted so that each separate design on a product is considered a separate product line which needs separate testing to meet compliance, than we may see kids products removed from the PODS completely. I also have questions about what new requirements and restrictions this will entail for those of us who also buy our own stock to sell outside the PODS on sites like Ebay or live events like crafts fairs.

I'd like to hear your take is on this. You can make a comment below, and if you know of any articles or information specifically pertaining to PODS please share a link. Thanks!

CPSIA Update

...continuing on previous post about how the CPSIA may affect the PODS

I think I have found some answers about some of the primary questions regarding how the CPSIA legislation might affect the PODS in the STR Quality CPSIA FAQ. STR (Specialized Technology Resources) is a compnay which describes it's business helping to "ensure the safety, quality, and social responsibility of our client's products at every stage of the supply chain, from drawing board to point of sale." In their FAQ regarding the CPSIA they include the following, which I found helpful:

Q7: On a stuffed toy that is produced in one production lot, there is embroidery work done separately on a panel of the stuffed toy that is unique to various retailers. Does the entire toy need to be tested in its finished form, with the unique embroidery thread used for each retailer included in that testing, or can the toy be tested once, and only the various colors of thread be tested on the finished product?

A7: The finished product needs to be tested, rather than the components prior to assembly. However, once you have tested that component on the first finished product, you should not need to test it again and again but rather can refer to the previous testing. So it's not component testing but rather finished product testing that avoids duplicate testing of same materials or components.

To me, this says that if a POD creates a shirt with all the colors of ink, and has every part (snap, material, and each section of ink color) on that shirt tested on that finished product, than it can create another shirt using all of those inks on the same type of and can rely on the previous testing. The next question they answered seemed to clarify this. See below:

Q8: Do garment labels need to be tested to the lead requirements?

A8: The CPSIA requires lead content compliance of all accessible materials on children's products. This would include the accessible label. Note that this could change should the CPSC decide to exempt certain materials from lead testing. Until such a decision is made, all accessible materials would have to be tested to confirm compliance. If identical labels (same manufacturer, identical materials) are used in more than one garment, we would not have to duplicate the testing as long as you have the traceability that the labels are identical.

ArtsNow Clothing Labels Don't Meet FCC Standards

If you've ever ordered a shirt from ArtsNow you may or may not have noticed that they are only labeled with the size, not the care instructions or fabric content. This, as some of you who are more informed than I probably already know, does not comply with FTC Labeling Standards. This means that these clothes are illegal to sell in the US unless you plan to attach your own labels to them (as I understand the laws--I've had to do a lot of reading on this since I became aware of it last month) or are selling these shirts specifically to institutional buyers for commercial use--such as company uniforms. I've contacted ArtsNow about it, both directly and through their forums, and they say they will fix this but that it will take three to six months.
