Why Do We Need Poems For Funerals

When you lose someone you care about it is very difficult to think straight and still try and find what you need to celebrate their life.  One of the things I found most comforting was specially written poems for funerals - it made speaking in public much easier at a time when my emotions were running high.  In my search I came across a few ideas that helped me - I hope they will help you too.

Do Not Stand At My Grave and Weep

Do Not Stand at My Grave and Weep
is one of the best things I found when I really needed some help. It is full of wonderful poems for funerals, or there are Readings if you prefer. It has all the well known poems that you just can't lay your hands on when you are fraught and dealing with everything else. What I also like is that there are loads of less well known poems that are good for cards or when you don't know what to say in a sympathy letter.

There's also a lot of help on writing a Eulogy if you want to do it yourself, even announcements and obituaries which can be so difficult to deal when you have so little time to think about what you want to say.

How To Write A Eulogy

Sometimes you do actually want or need to create the words yourself and that can be a truly daunting task as I have discovered. It's one of those things that is really easy when you know how, but until you do - just the thought is enough to scare you. A good friend pointed me in the direction of an excellent book on How to write a Eulogy. This gave me step by step guidance on how to prepare a Eulogy and most important, how to prepare myself - remembering to breathe is really important!

Stop All The Clocks

I thought this was one of the most moving readings of this poem I have ever come across

Funeral Blues

Here is me reading out a poem written by W.H.Auden and used in the film 4 weddings and a funneral.
