Poinsettia gifts and jewelry

Since the poinsettia is such a popular Christmas motif, there are many sites on the internet featuring this beautiful Christmas flower in crochet.  We have listed the links to many of these sites here on this lens.

The poinsettia was originally brought to America by our first Ambassador to Mexico, Joel Roberts Poinsett, bringing the plants to his South Carolina plantation in the 1820's

The flower is actually the small green and yellow center, with red leaf-like bracts forming below the flower, appearing to be flower petals. Poinsettia plants can be red, white, pink or bi-colored.

To enjoy the beauty of the Poinsettia, December 12 has been set aside, by an act of Congress, as National Poinsettia Day.

Care of Poinsettia Plants

The poinsettia plant is a flowering beauty that enhances holiday spirit, and is virtually the most common (or at least among the very popular) holiday décor items. The poinsettia has a long history of adding beauty and ambiance to the holiday season. Despite what you may think, you do not have to throw away your live poinsettia plant when the season simmers down. Therefore, even though your poinsettia will not be in the very best condition throughout the year, it can be kept, maintained, and flourish again next season.

The poinsettia has thin, pale green leaves. The poinsettias in bloom sprout bright bracts in red, pink, white or off-white colors on the tips of the leaves. An odd misconception, about the poinsettias is that the bracts are flower petals, when in fact, bracts are simply leaves that sort of masquerade as flowers. The actual "flowers" of the poinsettia are tiny blooms in little yellow clusters brightly enhancing the beauty of the plant at the center of the bracts leaves.

Some people have heard that the poinsettia is a poisonous plant. This is an absolute misconception, an "old wives tale." If someone actually ate a poinsettia plant they may be cursed with a bit of indigestion, for obvious reasons. Nonetheless, there is no way (aside from severe allergic reaction) that the poinsettia plant can harm you - especially not fatally.

If someone is allergic to latex, he or she is also very likely to have an allergic reaction to the sap of a poinsettia plant. Two - thirds of the latex-sensitive population is susceptible to the allergy because the poinsettia plant is a member of the euphorbia family. Ask your doctor about poinsettia trees if you have latex allergies of any kind.

The reason poinsettias come to bloom in the wintertime is because they bloom in response to shortening daylight hours. If you want to force blooming in perfect time for the holidays, you will need to put the plant in complete darkness for fourteen hours every night for about ten weeks or so before Christmas. So plan your perfect poinsettia plants in late September or early October. Remember not to prune your plant any later than September, though - or it will not be in perfect bloom for the holiday season.

Poinsettias prefer light. They require lots of bright, indirect sunlight and humid conditions in order to flourish. If you live in a dry environment, remember to mist the plants as often as necessary to keep them in prime condition. Recycling your poinsettias is great, and you can force them to flourish in prime time for the holiday season.

As long as you take care of your poinsettias, the longer you can keep them from holiday to holiday. You can prepare your poinsettias for the best possible presentation as soon as the holidays roll around without having to purchase new plants every year. Poinsettias are usually available only in average condition at most locations during the holiday season. If you have your own poinsettias from last year or the year before, other poinsettia plants will not be flourish the way that yours will. That is, if you prepare them properly for the season.
