Poison Ivy Treatment

Poison Ivy is a weed like plant which can be found all around the US of A and also in southern Canada. It causes an infection of the skin which is named as poison ivy which affects nearly half the population of america. According to the American Academy of Dermatology nearly 85% of people will develop an allergic reaction when exposed to poison ivy, poison oak or poison sumac.( This is really alarming )

The infection is caused by an oily resin known as URUSHIOL. Anybody can get this by just touching the leaves of poison ivy or anything which has Urushiol on it. The poison ivy treatment should be taken quickly inorder to stop the infection from spreading. Most of the cases will be light but there have been some severe cases which you would never want on yourself.

I will try to give you complete information about poison ivy symptoms, treatments and safety measures. If you have a good knowledge about this then you can avoid it and remain happy.

Poison Ivy is caused by URUSHIOL, which is an oily resin found on the plant.

Causes and Symptoms

As you have read that poison ivy infection occurs due to the thing known as Urushiol. This oil resin is present on the leaves, roots and twigs of poison ivy. If a sensitive person touches any place which has urushiol, it will start reacting with the skin and causes the infection.

Some people think that burning the plant will get rid of it for good. Believe me it is very bad idea. It will spread in the air while burning. When someone
inhales it, the infection will occur (this is why burning poison ivy is not a good idea).

The urushiol can also be found in poison oak, poison sumac and in less proportion in Japanese laquer tree, gingko tree, shells of cashews and brazil nuts and also in rinds of mangoes.

Symptoms

When a person touches the oil, a red, itchy rash will develop after a few hours in highly sensitive people. For others it may take a day of two. The rash will have linear appearance due to the way in which the leave touch the skin. It slowly develops into blisters or bumps and you can also experience swelling of the area.

In some severe cases there will be oozing blisters. It will be really painful. One thing to keep in mind is that the infection does not spread if you touch the affected area. Only if the urushiol is present, you will be infected.

Treatment and prevention

Poison Ivy infection will take about a week to 3 weeks for healing on their own. Many people will not be able to face the itching.

You can take medicine for relieving itch. For simple rashes using cold water or hot compresses will reduce the itching sensation. Some over the counter products like topical corticosteroids (also known as hydrocortisones) can also be taken to relieve itch temporarily. The itching skin can also be treated by Calamine lotion, bicarbonate of soda or Epsom salt.

For severe cases of poison ivy seeing a doctor will be better. Usually you will be prescribed oral corticosteroids like prednisone.
