Famous polar bears, Knut, Hudson, Flocke and Wilbaer have many things in common and a few things that are unique to each.

Here I'll share with you their stories with facts, pictures, videos, news clips, zoos and bear organizations, and places where you can get even more facts on each and on polar bears in general.

The photo here is of a semi-grownup Knut acting like a cub.

KNUT

Cute Knut from the Berlin Zoo

Knut, the polar bear cub at the Berlin Zoo whose mother rejected him was raised by a zookeeper. He stole the hearts of the world and helped to raise awareness of global warmings affect on polar bears.

Knut now has had everything from books and movies to stuff animals and stamps made with his image.

And, according to the director of the zoo, Knut helped the zoo bring in over $7.6 million in 2007 alone.

Knut's first year of life

When Knut turned 1 year old on December 5, 2007, he made the news again, big time. This little, er... I should say big bear now is famous for all of the following reasons:

1. Knut was the first polar bear born in the Berlin Zoo in over 30 years.
2. His mother rejected him at birth.
3. He was hand-fed and raised by one of the zoo keepers.
4. Knut received a death threat and had to have bodyguards.
5. The little bear had over 1 million visitors this past year.
6. He had a couple of books written about him.
7. Knut had several websites and a newspaper column devoted to him.
8. An animal rights activist said Knut should have been left to die instead of raised by humans.
9. The Berlin Zoo had infrared photos taken to ensure that Knut was not overheating (see infrared pictures).
10. Knut, who weighed about 1.8 pounds at birth, (see Knut baby pictures) now weighs over 236 pounds!

Below is a picture of Knut at at 1 year old:

knut-1yrold.jpg

I can't believe how fast this little polar bear grew. Knut had a very, very busy year. If you knew all of these facts, check your Knut Knowledge by taking the 12 question test at Knut Test.

Knut Bites the leg that feeds him. LOL

Knut still just a cub

It's true Knut captivated the world and brought a lot of attention to the plight of polar bears. This is a great book that tells the story. It's a must read in my opinion.

Knut's Human Father Dies

World and Knut mourne man who raised Knut

Thomas Doeflein, the zookeeper who raised Knut after his mother abandoned him, was found dead in his apartment on Monday, Sept. 22, 2008. The autopsy showed he died from a heart attack. Below is a picture taken of Knut shortly after the announcement. His sad look seems to say it all for many of us who fell in love with both Knut and Doeflein. Knut being kicked out by Berlin Zoo
After making millions of dollars for the Berlin Zoo, Knut is being kicked out. Why? Because he is no longer a cub so he needs a larger habitat. The Berlin zoo, who gladly reaped the rewards of Knut's fame, says it can't afford to build a larger enclosure (habitat) for the bear.
Berlin May Lose Knut to Rival
The world's favorite polar bear may be bidding auf wiedersehen to the Berlin Zoo. Cuddly tourist attraction Knut actually belongs to the north German zoo his father came from, and a move is expected in the first half of 2009. "We entered into a contract which stated that the first surviving cub is owned by Neumuenster Zoo," said the Berlin Zoo's director. But Berlin officials want to keep Knut-and the extra $6.3 million he pulled in last year, the BBC reports.
German zoos in bear fight
A court in Berlin has asked two German zoos to reach an amicable agreement over price for Knut the polar bear. Knut became a household name in Germany as a cub in Berlin Zoo, but he's owned by a different zoo, for now. DW-WORLD.DE: German and European news, analysis and multimedia from Deu
