Fetishes, PART I -- What They Are And How They Are Used
What Are Fetishes
Lee Kyadeyuse, ArtistFetishes Have Been Around Since 650 A.D.
Used by Indians since pre-Columbian times, fetishes have been found in archeological excavations that resemble certain animals. Fetishes dating back to 650 A.D. have been found in kivas and storage pits protecting food of the ancient Zuni Indians.A fetish is an object in which a spirit is thought to reside, often in the form of a charm or talisman and believed to possess magical powers that are capable of changing or affecting the course of events for either good or evil.
According to Wikipedia, the concept of a Fetish was coined in 1757 by a man named Charles de Brosses. Found among indigenous peoples around the world, fetishes are inanimate objects that can be made of materials such as bone, pottery, shell, stone, and wood.
Although fairly modern, the practice of making fetish jewelry arose from the desire of non-Native Americans to own "Indian style" items. It is only in the last 80 years that fetishes have been more realistically carved.
Purpose
It is believed by many that the main purpose of a fetish is to spiritually assist men against any real or even potential problems that can be of the mind, the body or the universe. When a fetish maker prays over a creation that has been ceremonially blessed by a priest or shaman, it is believed that a mystical power is released that will enable him or the owner of the fetish to find a solution to any problems they may have.Since the fetish has special powers, the owner must care for it and keep it in a special place such as a leather pouch with cornmeal.
Magical
According to the legend and beliefs of many, fetishes are only magical when they are used (worn).LIons, Fu Dogs and Bears (OH MY!)

Fetishes, PART II -- The People Who Create Them And Trade Routes
Southwest Indians, Zuni and Other Tribes
Teddy Weahkee, ArtistSouthwest IndiansIndian sculptors in the Southwest carved small stone figurines in animal, human and supernatural shapes. Zuni fetishes weretotemic, featuring inlaid eyes and heart lines while Navajo storytellers strung together fetish necklaces that served as mnemonics for traditional stories. The Hopi carved elaborate kachina dolls from whole cotton wood roots and the Pueblos carved figures from clay and fired them in their pottery kilns.
Additional Tribes
The Iroquois and Cherokee tribes were known for their elaborate wooden masks. The Ojibways carved pipes and ceremonial objects out of a certain type of clay called pipestone and the Algonquians of the east carved staffs and bowls out of tree roots. The Eskimos were known for their ceremonial dance masks made from wood and ivory and soapstone figurines.Trade Routes
Even in ancient times, with the lively trade routes throughout native North America, American Indian sculpture styles spread beyond a single tribe or culture group, fusing their styles together in many ways.Zuni carvers
Most of the fetishes created by North American natives however have been created in the southwest by the Zuni Indians, who have become known for their great number and variety of fetishes.Originally made for hunting, harvest, rain, religious and initiation ceremonies, fetishes are now used for things such as good luck, spiritual guidance, healing, longevity, attracting the opposite sex, fertility, protection from disease and evil, gambling, and nowadays even for decorative purposes.
Meticulous in detail, the Zunis work comes in a variety of styles. These days it is mostly aimed at the tourist or the collector.
Bear Fetish
In Zuni mythology, the Guardian of the West is the Bear fetish believed invaluable for one who is faced with change and transition. It can be an ally when attempting to resolve conflict or aid in facing a new challenge in your spiritual path. The Zunis believe that the bear can help us to "step out of our cave" into the sunshine after a long period of hibernation. The bear is known to represent the healing power within every living thing.Polar Bear Fetish Necklace Video

Polar Bear Necklace -- Horse Hair Raku
One-Of-A-Kind Sculptured Necklaces
I sculpt each bear individually (no molds are used). Then using the special firing technique known as "raku", I took the bear out of the kiln and dropped real horse hair onto the sculpture. As the fire consumes the hair, it twists and turns, producing an embedded one-of-a-kind pattern. After being scrubbed, I waxed and buffed each miniature sculpture. The necklace is reversable because each side of the bear is unique. The necklace is completed it with a sterling silver clasp and a leather strap.
PLEASE NOTE: Due to the creation process, each bear is unique, varying slightly in shape, size and patterning. Bear size is approximate.

TR & The Teddy Bear - PART 1
A True Story
Did you know that teddy bear collectors are known as arctophiles from the Greek words ìarctoî (bear) and ìphilosî (lover and that the teddy bear is younger than the electric light, the motor car, and the telephone? Many of us have loved a teddy bear at some point in our lives. And itís likely that we've even had more than one very special "teddy" in our lives.
However, did you ever here the real story of how the teddy bear sprang into our hearts?
A Hunting We Will Go
Well, it seems that 105 years ago, in November of 1902, President Theodore Roosevelt, went on a bear hunt into the swamps of Mississippi. He enjoyed nature and being out in the woods where animals lived. Because he was the President of the United States, the people organizing the hunt wanted to make sure the hunt was successful.
But after 3 days of walking and climbing and riding, no bears were found. Now what? The President's bear hunt would be a failure!
So, the next day the hunting guide, Holt Collier, and his hunting dogs finally found an old bear. The dogs and guide followed the 235-pound bear for quite a distance until the bear was very, very tired. The dogs attacked and injured the old bear. The guides tied the bear to a tree and called for the President. Here was a bear for him to shoot!
Don't Shoot!
President Roosevelt looked at the poor old bear and said "No, I wouldnít be able to look my boys in the face again! Spare the bear! I will not shoot a tethered animal!" No one would shoot this old bear for sport. That would not be right. However, the bear was injured and suffering. President Roosevelt ordered that the bear be put down to end its pain.
But the story doesnít end there, as reporters with the hunting party spread the news of Rooseveltís fair play nationwide.

TR & The Teddy Bear -- PART 2
Continuation Of A True Story
...continued from PART 2 aboveDrawing The Line
A political cartoonist by the name of Clifford Berryman, who was a staff artist for the Washington Post, heard this story and, of course, since a political cartoonist draws about current events in the news, on the following day Mr. Berryman drew a cartoon showing how President Roosevelt refused to shoot the bear while hunting in Mississippi. Written across the lower part of the cartoon were the words ìDrawing the Line in Mississippi,î which coupled the hunting incident to a political dispute.
Teddy's Bear
The cartoon was reprinted in newspapers all over the country and Roosevelt's popularity soared. So for the remainder of his political career, Teddy Roosevelt and a mascot named "Teddy's Bear."
It seems that among the many readers who saw the Berryman cartoon was a Russian immigrant by the name of Morris Michtom. The owner of a small novelty store in Brooklyn, New York, Michtom had his wife make 2 toy bears that had movable limbs. Unlike toy bears available at the time, these little bears were made from plush stuffed excelsior and finished with black shoe button eyes.
The Michtom's new bear was sweet and cuddly. They sold quickly, so they made others, and received permission from T.R. to use the Roosevelt's name in connection with the little bear.
Called "Teddy's Bears", these little stuffed bears were a great success, allowing Michtom to move his business to a loft, under the name of the Ideal Novelty and Toy Corporation, the first teddy bear manufacturer in the United States. It remained a successful business and in 1938 changed its name to the Ideal Toy Company.
The most popular plush toy -- and possibly the most popular of all toys -- the teddy bear has withstood the test of time.
