Polished Floor Tiles: Porcelain, Ceramic or Natural Stone?

Polished Floor Tiles come in so many different formats, materials and colours these days that it can be overwhelming to choose the right one for you. The quality of tiles has improved so much over the years that you can pick a tile to live with for a good 10 years! So unlike carpet, you will have a big task on your hands removing those tiles if they are the wrong choice for your lifestyle.

Sometimes people can be apprehensive when it comes to polished floors, as they can be slippery when wet. However, there are some incredible floor treatment products on the market that will help to provide a safer surface.

I would like to show you the differences between the various flooring options and will focus on Porcelain, Ceramic and Natural Stone. It's a personal preference, but utimately the end decision tends to boil down to maintenance and how much one is prepared to take on.

The case for Porcelain tiles

Whether matt or polished porcelain, this versatile material is hard to beat

Natural Stone Look PorcelainPorcelain is a subtype of ceramic and owes its popularity to its enduring strength and low maintenance. With the cutting edge manufacturing processes nowadays, the design potential is limitless. Whether matt or polished floor tiles, the stone replicas are produced in such a way that it can be difficult to tell them apart from the real thing!

Porcelain tiles are fired at extremely high temperatures, making them stronger and harder than traditional ceramic tiles. With regards to wear resistance, it can be described as taking a sledge hammer to crack a nut. For your residential applications, the inherent properties make them extremely wear-resistant and they will absorb less water than other ceramic tiles.

This makes porcelain an excellent choice for high-traffic areas of the home, especially those regularly exposed to moisture such as the bathroom. With the anti-slip kit, you can enjoy a high gloss polished floor tile in the bathroom!

One thing I will mention though, is that the cheaper versions can sometimes scratch more easily than a quality one. I only know this from examples that our customers have brought in to us, when they were looking to replace their tiles. So be careful and perhaps use a sample to run some tests. It might save you a bit of heartache in the long run.

Don't Forget If Choosing Porcelain:

Please use Flexible Adhesive when laying your porcelain tiles, you may encounter serious problems such as cracking later on if you don't.

Ceramic Tiles

A good option for a residential application

Polished Stone Look FloorAs well as giving your walls a beautiful covering, ceramic tiles are produced in matt, abrasive slip-resistant finishes and high-gloss polished floor tiles.

One of the main disadvantages of the past when living with a ceramic floor tile, as the tile would be manufactured from a terracotta base it made it quite susceptible to chipping. This is because the glaze is baked on top and through any cracks the terracotta colour is revealed.

These days, the ceramic tiles are produced to very high standards, making them more resilient to knocks and cracking.

Natural Stone: each tile is unique!

Polished Natural Stone Floor

Natural stone has been used for thousands of years worldwide. It's beauty has fascinated people universally from times gone by to present day. It is the depth and colour, the fossils and crystals that capture the imagination of interior designers and homemakers alike.

It does need special care though. Sealing these tiles with a specialist sealer such as Lithofin Stainstop is essential due to its naturally porous properties. This probably is its only disadvantage over the practically stress free maintenance of Porcelain and Ceramic tiles. The polished floor tiles may dull over time in heavy traffic areas, so regular care is required to maintain its beauty.

You Decide!

This is a great lens. Of course your pictures are great, but you have a lot of really good information on selecting the right tile for the right space. Your tips on adhesive and installation are really helpful as well. Thanks for the information.
