Fact Checking and Politics

This political season and especially in this upcoming Presidential election make sure to "Check your Facts" and check them twice! Many have much more respect for those who check facts rather than just listen to the media mumbo jumbo. Check what the candidates are saying is it true, or not. I find the fact check sites interesting, easy to use, and actually a lot of fun. I laugh sometimes and find some really interesting history, but it is easy like I said. Like at Politifact, you get the statement with a photo of the person, then if it is true, and you can click for more information about why it is true or false.

Look, I have dyslexia and sometimes reading can be such a chore for me, and I read what interests me most, and these sites are wonderful. I also added c-span where you can watch archives on line and watch live debates on tv. You hear for yourself what they said, then you can fact check on these sites or check archives for flip flops. Flip flops to me are the same as lies, it is all for the benefit of a win. I would need a believable excuse for the flip. I hope this lens helps with your search for the truth this political season. We all respect the person who has real facts, so do not look foolish in a debate with others, have your facts.

Fact checking is important!

I mean, come on everyone, we know all political leaders, whether Presidents, House, Senate, or State lie. It is a known fact they also flip flop to gain votes and so on and so on and so on. Well, it is time we all start checking the facts, things we may not have known because we are not standing with the candidate 24/7, or things we may not know about the past. It is time that we the people call them out on lies and find who we really think deserves to run things. It is time that we comment on posts on youtube and blogs to back up our statements and let others know the truth whether you or they want to hear it or not . It is time for smart debate among ourselves and those in Washington, the facts are out there and more are using these sites and others to find the truth.

If my question is not answered the way I like or I just cant believe the answer, then I look further. You can research with wiki or news archives. Facts are important for all parties whether Republican, Democratic, or Independent..... I hope you will find this page useful.

Politifact

Politifact is my favorite, I just love it. It is not only informative, easy to get around and great reading, but also fun!

PolitiFact.com is a project that is operated by the St. Petersburg Times, a project in which its reporters and editors "fact-check statements by members of Congress, the White House, lobbyists and interest groups.

They publish original statements and their evaluations on the PolitiFact.com website, and assign each a "Truth-O-Meter" rating. The ratings range from "True" for completely accurate statements to "Pants on Fire" (from the taunt "Liar, liar, pants on fire") for outright lies.

PolitiFact.com was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting in 2009 for "its fact-checking initiative during the 2008 presidential campaign that used probing reporters and the power of the World Wide Web to examine more than 750 political claims, separating rhetoric from truth to enlighten voters

Harry Reid and John Boehner, August 2011 Fact Check

As you will see the checkers are bipartisan, looking up and finding facts is the goal. This site offers the truth-o-meter and if you click you can read more about the statement and truth about it. The meter goes from very true to pants on fire false. Like I said, I more respect the word of someone who looks up facts than listen to the media. Reading is a gift humans have, why not use it and find out the truth.

When you are on the website, under the meter is an underlined little blurb as you can see here, it is a link you can click for more information.

The "Promise Meter", date of this check was August 2011

In image below you will see president Obama's head on a meter and a GOP elephant on one as well, these are promise meters and what they have done recently to achieve the goal and how the goal of the promise is progressing.

FactCheck.org a non-partisan, nonprofit, set up to help stop lies and deceptions during elections.

I enjoy visiting this site as well, it's pretty easy to get around and understand more around debate and stories, as well findings.

FactCheck has won three Webby Awards in the Politics category, in 2008, 2010 and 2011.

Most of its content consists of rebuttals to what it considers inaccurate, misleading, or false claims by politicians. FactCheck has also targeted misleading claims from various partisan groups. Besides maintaining a website, FactCheck.org distributes audio stories by podcast and iTunes Radio.
With three television channels (C-SPAN, C-SPAN2 and C-SPAN3), one radio station What is wonderful about Cspan is that you can watch live the debates on bills and such and look up any flip flops in the library to me flip flops are just as bad as lies unless they give a great reason for it

C-SPAN's television channels are available to over 100 million cable and satellite households within the United States, while WCSP-FM, also called C-SPAN Radio, is broadcast on FM radio in Washington, D.C., and is available throughout the U.S. on XM Satellite Radio, and via internet streaming and an iPhone app.

I added this link because it is fascinating how accurate they predict outcomes of elctions.

Five Thirty Eight, the geniuses who can predict most everything in politics correctly. The site has polls and results, maps, blogs from top political analysts, and of course the real genius behind it all is Nate Silver.

_____________________

Five Thirty Eight is a blog created by Nate Silver. Sometimes colloquially referred to as 538 dot com or just 538, the website takes it's name from the number of electors in the United States electoral college.

Established on March 7, 2008 as FiveThirtyEight.com, in August 2010 the blog became a licensed feature of the New York Times online and was renamed FiveThirtyEight: Nate Silver's Political Calculus.

During the presidential primaries and general election of 2008, the site compiled polling data through a unique methodology derived from Silver's experience in baseball sabermetrics to "balance out the polls with comparative demographic data" and "weighting each poll based on the pollster's historical track record, sample size, and recentness of the poll".

For the 2008 Presidential Election, FiveThirtyEight.com also used computer models to simulate the election 10,000 times per day in order to provide a continually up-to-date assessment of probability for electoral outcomes. The method proved to be highly accurate, as Silver correctly predicted the winner of 49 of the 50 states in the presidential election, as well as every Senate race in 2008.

Fact checking pledge

The "Fact Checking" pledge

Will you, if voting in the next election, pledge to check facts before forming an opinion?

We all have times when we hear something on our favorite news station, whether that is Fox News for Conservatives or maybe MSNBC for Liberals, and we want to go right out and post things because something angers us, even if it might not be true. Whether Liberal or Conservative, we all should check facts. We all should find speeches or interviews and not just take the cut version that is most likely out of context.

Let me know if you will pledge to at least try to do more fact checking if you do not fact check presently; or if you already do fact check that you will continue to do so. There is no need say what party, I don't really care, LOL, just want more facts and the truth spread.

The subject of fact checking politicians is, IMO, more important than most people realize. I am continuously appalled at the nonsense that comes from politicians only interested in self promotion via inaccuracy and dishonesty. Thank you for sharing - 1 more squidlike for you!
