Political buttons as badges of ideological tribes

Political buttons are popular because they are ways to make an internal ideal part of one's external appearance. Some people collect political buttons as a hobby, but more commonly, people gather political buttons that represent who they are at the moment, in a social sense. So, people who wear a button for a particular candidate or cause are hoping, consciously or unconsciously, to come across other people who are wearing the same button. They are hoping to meet long lost members of their own political tribe.

A Map of Progressive Political Buttons 

Google map shows where liberal political buttons are being sold

There are a lot of theoretical predictions about which states ought to go for the Democrats or for the Republicans, in the congressional elections or the presidential election. One strong sign that's being ignored by the pundits, however, is political button sales.

Where are progressive political buttons being sold? Those states ought to be those where Democratic politicians will do well. The people over at Irregular Times who sell these buttons have put together a map, using Google Maps, that shows where recent shipments of their political buttons have gone.
