Just Like the Ones I Used to Know
The lens idea started when I was wandering around online in November 2007 and noted that Santas warned 'ho ho ho' offensive to women in Sydney, Australia. I was amused and saddened. Leave Santa Claus alone! Come on now. How could Santa Claus be offensive?
So, I started this lens because I don't think that politically correct people that are working to destroy the traditions and beliefs of Christianity (or any other religion) are doing society any favors.
I've had the lens for awhile now, so some of the information is older. I'll be updating for Christmas 2009.
Where to Shop 2009
The American Family Association is keeping track of the top retailers and how they treat Christmas (in 2009). On the list you'll find the retailers that censor the word Christmas, and those that are Christmas-friendly.I personally will plan my shopping list around retailers (listed below) that are in the green and have proven themselves to be 100% Christmas friendly. I hope that more people follow the lead because how else can we send the message to retailers that being inclusive of other religions in the USA doesn't mean they have to exclude Christians? Here are the stores the AFA lists that are Christmas-friendly!

Christmas Traditions
Beauty is Found in the Eye of the Beholder
In Catalonia, as well as in the rest of Spain and in most of Italy and Southern France, traditional Christmas decorations consist of a large model of the city of Bethlehem, similar to the Nativity scenes of the English-speaking world but encompassing the entire city rather than just the typical manger scene. The caganer is a particular feature of modern Catalan nativity scenes. Accompanying Mary, Joseph, Jesus, the Shepherds and company, the caganer is often tucked away in a corner of the model, typically nowhere near the manger scene. There is a good reason for his obscure position in the display, for "caganer" translates from Catalan to English as "pooper", and that is exactly what this little statue is doing - defecating. That Wikipedia article continues by describing that in 2005 when the powers that be at the Barcelona city council commissioned a nativity scene that left out the caganer, there was a public outcry. Seems the public in Catalonia doesn't want their traditions ... sanitized. (That pun came with the Wikipedia article.)
The reason the Nativity scene and caganer are hitting high together in search engines this year is because President Elect Barack Obama is a popular caganers in 2008. The on-line store says that is an honor in Catalonia.
I for one would rather see a Barack Obama caganer at my capital building than an anti-Christian statement. I don't have the Catalan beliefs as part of my upbringing, but the intention of that tradition isn't hateful.

- I'm with you...let's let everyone celebrate however they want to celebrate. Just because my beliefs don't mirror someone else's doesn't give me the right to protest theirs and vice versa. "Peace on earth and goodwill toward men" should be the underlying message regardless of your religion.
