How the Glad Girl - Pollyana - transformed my day

This was not a very good day for me. I was feeling distracted and stressed out - over some memories from the past that surfaced unexpectedly. I would gladly erase them permanently form my memory - if only I could find a magic eraser to do just that...

While working on another webpage and looking for some images and videos to complement my writing, I - strangely enough - came across the videos of an old movie, made in 1960 by Disney Studios: Polyanna.

Wild horses wouldn't be able to stop me at that time - so powerfully I felt drawn to click on play button of part 1 video. Only a few minutes later I was smiling happily. My annoyance effortlessly melted away as I listened to Pollyanna's cheerful voice and her enthusiastic life philosophy.

And - to be completely honest - I made this page for myself. So I can come back any time and watch the entire movie - or a certain part of it. In case anyone wants to join me - you're all more than welcome. I don't mind sharing the laughter... :)

Pollyanna movie from 1960 by Disney Studios

based on a best-selling 1913 novel by Eleanor H. Porter

What is now considered a classic of children's literature, Pollyanna by Eleanor H. Porter - has been adapted for movies, TV and theater - numerous times.

One of the most successful adaptations, the 1960 film, was a huge success for Disney Studios and the English actress Hayley Mills (Pollyanna) - which made her a Hollywood star. She won a special Oscar for the role - and a Disney contract.

The movie was shot in - at that time small town - of Santa Rosa, California, at the McDonald Mansion (aka Mableton Mansion) on McDonald Avenue.

The film adaptations are not completely faithful to the novel. The movie directors invented some tweaks, changed some names, altered the role of some characters and the ending.

Also, the original book had several sequels - and the film never got one.

Summary for a book

Pollyanna by Eleanor H. Porter

A young orphan, Pollyanna Whittier, comes to live with her rich and relentless aunt Polly in Beldingsville, Vermont. In every situation that occurs, Pollyanna plays "The Glad Game" her father taught her: to find something to be glad about - no matter what.

With this enthusiastic life philosophy and cheerful personality, Pollyanna's gladness soon affects her aunt - and everyone else she meets in the small and greatly dispirited New Englad town - which slowly transforms into a nice place to live - because its inhabitants start smiling at each other.

Pollyanna teaches some of the Beldingsville's most uncompromising characters how to play "The Glad Game:" a grouchy and always ill Mrs. Snow, and a mean and lonely bachelor, Mr. Pendleton. Aunt Polly proved to be the toughest one - by resisting the glad game for longer than anybody else.

After Pollyanna gets hit by a motorcar and her legs paralyzed, both - her endless optimism and aunt Polly's resistance were put to the great test.

Pollyanna lies in bed, unable to find a single reason to be glad in her situation - until the townspeople start showing up at aunt Polly's house and expressing their appreciation for their newly learned gladness. Pollyanna realizes that still having legs is reason enough to be glad.

Aunt Polly ends up marrying her former lover Dr. Chilton - which is also the beginning of a new, happy family. Pollyanna was sent to the hospital and eventually starts to walk again. Her gladness about being able to use her legs again - gets bigger than ever.

What do you think about Pollyanna and her glad game?

Are you a lot like her - or not at all?

Pollyanna is a really cool movie. We could do with a few more movies like that these days!

I'm sorry that I don't have time to watch all the sections of the movie right now. The book really grabbed my imagination when I was a kid. I read lots of stories about orphans.
Well done and blessed by an angel.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Always had a soft spot for the Hayley Mills version.

Loved the Pollyanna movie, the older version was always my favorite. I thought her glad game was cute.
