Spaying and Nutering

Spay and Nuter you pet

The American Humane Society estimates that more than 15 million, healthy, friendly dogs, cats, puppies and kittens will be put to sleep in shelters this year because nobody wants them. There are however, two important things that you can do to help end these needless slaughters. Spay/neuter your pets to prevent unwanted animals, and opt to adopt from your local animal shelter or rescue. Shelters and rescues are filled with cats, dogs, bunnies, birds, ferrets, and even horses and goats. These animals all have one thing in common, they are in need of a loving home. Reasons to Opt to Adopt -You will be saving a life. By adopting an animal from the shelter that is one more animal in this world given a second chance, one less to be marked as destroyed, and one pet that will love you forever. -Shelter pets are current on vaccines, tests, and spay/neuter. Puppies and kittens that are too young to be spayed/neutered are usually given a voucher for a free spay/neuter. All you have to do is pay the adoption fee which can range from $25-$80. Common Myths About Shelter Adoptions "They are all sick" -This just isnt true, but it is the chance you take when you adopt, or buy any animal. Nobody can guarantee the health of any animal. You will find many pets abandoned in shelters are not give up due to behavior problems, but due to pet owners not having the time or energy to train and redirect behavior problems when they arise. The majority of shelters and rescues have a staff of volunteers and foster families dedicated to redirecting improper behavior problems prior to adoption. The second most popular reason pets are given up is because the family is moving, while "he is just too big for our home" is ranked 3rd. The majority are strays that were picked up by animal control or rescuers. "All shelters have are adult dogs and cats." This isnt true, kittens and puppies go very quickly in shelters. Give some thought to the adult adoption. More healthy adult dogs and cats are put to sleep in shelters then puppies and kittens. These adult animals are not a surprise, what you see is what you get. You will already know how big the animal is, they already know basic commands, and do not need the constant supervision and training that goes along with owning a kitten or puppy. Adults are all caught up on vaccines and are spayed/neutered prior to adoption. "But we want a Siamese or Golden Retriever." Believe it or not, pure bred pets make up nearly 40% of the population in shelters.

Companies that test on animals

Companies that DO TEST on ANIMALS

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are these companies included on the Do Test list?

The following companies manufacture products that ARE tested on animals. Those marked with a "X" are currently observing a moratorium on (i.e., current suspension of) animal testing. Please encourage them to announce a permanent ban. Listed in parentheses are examples of products manufactured by either the company listed or, if applicable, its parent company. For a complete listing of products manufactured by a company on this list, please visit the companys Web site or contact it directly for more information. Companies on this list may manufacture individual lines of products without animal testing (e.g., Clairol claims that its Herbal Essences line are not animal tested). They have not, however, eliminated animal testing from their entire line of cosmetics and household products.

Similarly, companies on this list may make some products, such as pharmaceuticals, that are required by law to be tested on animals. However, the reason for these companies inclusion is not the required animal testing that they conduct, but rather the animal testing of personal care and household products that is not required by law.

What can be done about animal tests required by law?

Although animal testing of pharmaceuticals and certain chemicals is still mandated by law, the arguments against using animals in cosmetics testing are still valid when applied to the pharmaceutical and chemical industries. These industries are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency, respectively, and it is the responsibility of the companies that kill animals in order to bring their products to market to convince the regulatory agencies that there is a better way to determine product safety. PETA is actively working on this front by funding development and validation of non-animal test methods and providing input through our involvement on government advisory committees at both the national and international levels. Companies resist progress because the crude nature of animal tests allows them to market many products that might be determined to be too toxic if cell culture tests were used. Let companies know how you feel about this.

Breed Specific Legislation

BSL

Fact vs Fiction: Media Myths

In a world where the media educates the public, owners of specific dog breeds have reason to be fearful. Rather than reporting on the truth, the majority of media companies see an opportunity to sell papers by building false myths about certain canine breeds.
What is the truth about Staffords and related bull breeds? How does the public feel about being manipulated by the media? Should the media be accountable for their role in encouraging dog bites? It is about time that people looked at the real problem behind dog bites and realized that dog owners are the true problem.

The media's methodology of sensationalizing dog attacks and the supposed 'dangers' of certain dog breeds not only deflects attention away from the people that are the real problem, but it encourages those people to continue abusing their dogs.

Strategies for Opposing BSL
Fighting Breed Specific Legislation (BSL)
What should you do when you learn of a proposed breed-specific bylaw that you want to fight?

The best thing you can do is to realize that there are others out there who are already informed and want to help.

Don't waste valuable time re-inventing the wheel.

Do get involved and work with a network of people who can help you to take action effectively.

Keep one thing at the centre of your thoughts: your goal is to do what it takes to ensure that breed specific legislation is not passed.

Offer a better alternative to legislators.

BSL

Very touching video regarding BSL, say no to BSL, Ban stupid people not the animals

BSL

BSL does not address these root causes behind dog attacks. It simply blames a particular breed or breeds without actually solving the real problem of irresponsible ownership and lack of education. BSL is illogical, expensive, and ineffective. Non-breed-specific dangerous dog laws and anti-cruelty laws are more effective, provided those laws are strongly written and firmly enforced. Increased education (especially for dog owners and children) will also help reduce dog bites/attacks, as will low-cost spay/neuter campaigns. We need more funding for animal control agencies to enforce the laws and tackle dog fighting. These strategies make sense. BSL is a wet bandaid.

BSL: A Responsible Owner's Nightmare

BSL(Breed Specific Legislation)is spreading through the country like wildfire. In light of recent breed bans in Royal City and Louisville, I urge my fellow citizens to stand up and let your voices be heard so this doesn't happen again in another city. As Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King stated, " A time comes when silence is betrayel."

the truth about Puppy Mills

Boy cot puppy mills

Pet Store Puppies DO Come From Puppy Mills

There is NO doubt about it. Puppies are CUTE! People are suckers for puppies. When someone sees the adorable puppies in the cages at the petstore it IS hard to resist. We're here to tell you why you should resist.

Many people are actually concerned about where the pups come from and will ask the store clerks if the puppies come from Puppy Mills. The TRAINED salesperson will say something to the effect, "no, our puppies come from private breeders", or "no, our puppies come from local breeders", or "no, our puppies come from USDA inspected kennels". Most people are satisfied with either of those answers.

Well we aren't!

Many pet shops get their puppies from a middleman...a puppy broker. The puppy broker buys the puppy from the puppy miller and the broker then sells to pet stores. A well known puppy broker is the Hunte Corporation. Maybe pet stores feel that since they didn't buy the puppy DIRECTLY from the breeder than they can "honestly" say they do not get their puppies from puppy mills. Also, there is no official definition of puppy mills so they can also avoid answering the question honestly since technically the pups come from Commercial Kennels.
PRIVATE BREEDERS? First of all what defines a private breeder? Nothing. If there are private breeders, who are the public breeders? There's NO such thing! So when that sales kid tells you that the pup is from a private breeder he could be talking about ANY breeder in the country.

LOCAL BREEDERS When a salesperson says they get their pups from local breeders it could either be what they were trained to say or it could mean they actually do get their puppies from local commercial kennels. "Local" doesn't mean that they aren't from a puppy mill. Our local pet store has "local" puppies too...straight from the local puppymill!

USDA Licensed & Inspected Kennels This also doesn't mean that the pups come from a good place. I have seen dogs from USDA Licensed & Inspected Kennels with rotting mouths, open wounds, skin diseases, and many other health problems. Rabbit cages and hutches are acceptable houses for dogs (according to the USDA!). If the puppy millers do not want to exercise the dogs (meaning the dogs live in a cage 24/7 for their WHOLE lives) all they have to do is double the size of their cage.

Dogs are wonderful, faithful companions. Can you imagine your dog living in a cage where she stands on wire her WHOLE life? Can you imagine her never getting out of the cage to roll around in the grass or play in the snow? Maybe your dog is afraid of thunderstorms. Imagine how she'd feel living in a rabbit hutch with no other protection from the elements. No where to escape from the cracking thunder, pounding rain, and fierce winds. Could you imagine your dog living 10-16 years (or more) in a cage, never knowing a gentle touch, pumping out litter after litter, not being able to get away from the puppies when she needs a break? Could you imagine her in so much pain from an abcess in her mouth but not being able to get medical care or relief for the pain. Her teeth are rotting away, her bottom jaw doesn't exist because the bone has rotted away, can you imagine how badly it hurts her to eat?

Could you imagine doing any of that to your dog? NO! Of course not! And why is that? Because it is cruel - that's why!

USDA Licensed & Inspected kennels get away with that and a lot more and thousands of dogs are suffering. Even if the dogs are cared for medically, their psychological needs are not being met.

Many kennels aren't even licensed with the USDA, so they don't have ANY standards to meet. As long as they sell to the puppy buyers themselves, they do not need a license. They advertise in newspapers, online, sell at flea markets, parking lots, etc.

Want a Healthy Pup?

If you don't care how the puppy's parents are kept (how could you not?) at least think about the potential health issues your puppy could have. The parents in commercial kennels have not been through appropriate health tests or screenings and you could end up with a puppy who seems healthy but with congenital defects that show up later in life - many of which are extremely costly to you, the puppy buyer. Other people end up with puppies who are sick right off the bat and have to spend hundreds, sometimes even thousands of dollars to make their new puppy well. Sadly, some puppies don't even make it and it is utterly heartbreaking for their families.

So please, don't shop at pet stores! Adopt from your local shelter, www.petfinder.com, or find a reputable breeder. If you need more help or advice about finding a reputable breeder, send us a message or visit www.nopuppymills.com.

Look at the Big Picture

Yes, the puppies are cute and you may think you are saving just that one. But as soon as you leave that store, they will be ordering a new puppy to fill that cage....which means you just contributed to and supported this nasty business. As long as the demand is there, there will be the supply. The only way we can help stop this horrid industry is to not buy their puppies and educate others to do the same.

Already Bought a Pet Store Pup?

If you have already purchased a pet store puppy and would like to know more about its origins visit www.petshoppuppies.com for a free puppy report.

Remember Puppy Millers also sell their puppies online and in newspaper ads. Stay away from breeders that breed more than one or two breeds. A reputable breeder would not sell to just anyone online. Some reputable breeders will have websites, but they will want to know a lot about you and the home you will provide for their puppy before even thinking about accepting a deposit. A online pet store that will sell and ship you a puppy, no questions asked is not someone who cares about their pups

The Truth about Puppy Mills

Hundreds of thousands of puppies are breed at Puppy Mills, and then sold to Pet Stores. These dogs only job is to breed and have puppies, so the owner can make as much of a profit as possible. If the dogs can no longer breed, then they are very often killed with a metal object beaten against their head. No health care, never enough food, and no medical care, these dogs live in a wire crate their whole life with no socialization, and never able to enjoy the grass and walking. This is no way to live. To stop Puppies Mills, don't buy puppies at Pet Stores.

Cruelty to animals is a serious matter

Cruelty to animals is a serious matter,

Cruelty to animals is a serious matter. Like you and me, animals feel pain. Most cruelty cases happen to animals who are too trusting or defenseless. They squeal, shriek and yeowl, but are often never heard by anyone but themselves. Think about what the animal went through at the hands of a merciless criminal. Anyone who is caught committing acts of abuse, cruelty and neglect to an animal deserves to be prosecuted. YOU can help bring justice to the animals who are needlessly abused. REPORT ANIMAL ABUSE TO THE POLICE OR ANIMAL CONTROL IN YOUR AREA.

The Link Between Animal Abuse and Family Violence

Millie was shaking and cowering in the corner of the room as the Maricopa County Animal Control officer approached the house. "Take this dog," said her owner. "We don't need it anymore." Millie whimpered as the officer gently lifted her. Millie was skin and bones and had an open wound. Sadness overcame the officer as he moved to leave.

A young, crying boy suddenly appeared. "Please take care of her," the boy said. My father did not mean to hurt her. It was my fault. I shouldn't have been so bad." As Millie turned to lick the boy's hand, the father screamed, "Get in the house now." The boy lowered his head, turned and walked away.

This sad story is not uncommon. Each day thousands of animals are victims of abuse. But when animal abuse occurs the animal is often not the only victim. Animal abuse is one step in the cycle of domestic violence and it does not stand-alone. Many studies have shown a clear connection between animal abuse and other forms of family violence. If there is an animal in a home where child, spousal, or elder abuse occurs, you will often find animal abuse and vice-versa.

In one study that looked at violent criminals, a significantly higher rate of aggressive criminals had a history of animal abuse. Another study held in 1983 showed that 60% of families, who met the New Jersey State criterion for child abuse, also abused or neglected the family pet. And, in a 1997 study that surveyed 38 women seeking refuge from an abusive relationship, 71% reported having a pet that was threatened or harmed by their batterer.

Animal abuse should be taken seriously, as it is often an indicator that something else is going on in the home or with the individual. Many convicted serial killers have had animal abuse in their background. The infamous Jeffrey Dahmer impaled frogs and cats on sticks as a youngster. Theodore Bundy was linked to graveyards
