MISSION STATEMENT

The Family Child Care Association of Modoc County, Inc. (FCCAMC), State of California, founded by Artia Kemper in 2006, is a non-profit, professional organization dedicated to supporting family child care providers. Members include advocates of quality childcare - parents, providers, and others interested in the education of young children in Modoc County.

The Association goals are:
To ease isolation of providers;
To develop a support system;
To encourage licensing;
To discuss pertinent issues.

The mission of FCCAMC is to act as a united voice to promote and strengthen the professionalism of providers thereby promoting the quality of family child care.

THE BENEFITS OF BELONGING TO A PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATION

by Rhonda Yeager - Published in APHCA, Houston Monthly Newsletter June 1999

Many childcare providers experience isolation, burnout, and/or boredom at some point in their careers and will abandon their businesses within the first two years of operation. Unfortunately for them, they never discover the benefits of belonging to a professional organization.

A professional childcare organization provides a solid foundation for networking among childcare professionals. It's important to know that we all share the same triumphs and tribulations for we are NOT ALONE. Childcare providers belonging to a professional organization network with each other to provide support and encouragement. We realize that "our problems" are not unique and that sometimes the solution to a childcare problem is just a phone call away!

Joining a professional organization provides an opportunity to meet others in your profession. Some will have numerous years of experience, while some are just beginning. Lifelong friendships can be formed and your interests expanded.

Many childcare providers belonging to professional organizations develop or discover leadership roles after they have gained confidence with support from association members. And, once you have established confidence in yourself, and are able to lead others in the field, you experience personal gratification in your daycare business. Thus, losing those feelings of isolation, burnout, and/or boredom.

And even if you choose to not be a leader, you will gain well-rounded experience, broaden your horizons, and enjoy socializing with a new family of friends. Your childcare problems will seem less trivial and you'll develop a new sense of importance after all, isn't that what we're all looking for?

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

FIRST 5 MODOC GRANT:
FCCAMC, California wrote, obtained and managed a mini grant from First 5 Modoc, California. The project was: Infant, Toddler & Twos Montessori Teaching Program. Two members, Ann Hess & Artia Kemper, received Montessori Teaching Diplomas. FCCAMC California will include Montessori articles in "The Provider's Voice" newsletter (monthly); and FCCAMC California will have presentations of Montessori Activities at Association meetings (monthly).

Round 1: INTERNATIONAL CHILD RESOURCE INSTITUTE
FAMILY CHILD CARE ASSOCIATION DEVELOPMENT PROJECT:
FCCAMC, California wrote and obtained a grant to strengthen their Association.

We wanted to strengthen our Association and help mold it into a strong, viable entity by attending the leadership training offered by ICRI; by providing incentives for interested persons (snacks, coffee and water) to attend and join the Association; by providing business cards for Licensed childcare providers; by providing childcare for Association representatives to attend childcare collaborative meetings; by advertising the Association in the local newspaper; and by providing a monthly newsletter to licensed, license-exempt and family friend & neighbor childcare providers, and interested agencies.

We used the Grant Funds to attend a Leadership Traning. Five of our officers attended the ICRI leadership training in Weaverville in March, 2007. A team building workshop was held for all interested members to continue our Association growth, wherein Gift certificates with the value of $6 were given to all licensed childcare providers to purchase business cards from VistaPrint.com. The Leadership Training enabled members to confidently fill their roles.

All licensed childcare providers and members of the Association received paid membership in the California Association for Family Child Care.

The Association started a contest to reward the most active member in the Association with a paid membership to the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).

The Association became members and purchased Member's Choice--NAEIR, to provide childcare providers with inexpensive supplies for their business.

Due to weather, "Week of the Young Child" is held in May at the annual "Children's Fair." The Association provided a hot dog stand, bottled water, and games for the children at the Fair. The Association also conducted a survey to obtain a starting measurable outcome of parents and children who have their own library of books for reading; to find volunteers to help with fundraising activities; and to find persons interested in receiving the Association's monthly newsletter, "The Provider's Voice." The Association received 21 surveys-15 agreed to help with a fundraiser; 4 agreed to offer donations; and 12 signed up to receive the newsletter. Eight officers of the Association participated in this event.

The Association President, was elected Northern Regional Representative of the California Association for Family Child Care (CAFCC), and has been involved in the conference calls regarding the Family Child Care Representation Bill, AB 1164; Internal Revenue Service requirements for annual tax filings provided to non-profit Associations; and homeowner's insurance issues to family childcare providers.

The Association purchased a laser printer to publish more copies of the newsletter to reach more childcare providers and persons in the community interested in childcare issues.
